I got this Ring doorbell

Had been wanting something like this and it went on sale on BF/CM so I snagged one.

Really cool. I'm glad I bought it. My use case is kinda unique but I dig it.

You can hook it up standalone and it will run off of battery power. You can recharge the battery by removing the unit from the mounted plate. You download the app to your phone and/or your desktop. It configured pretty much automatically once you select your wifi network and type in the password. Someone rings it and it rings you on your phone and/or desktop via notification. You click on it, it immediately pulls up video. You can click on a talk button and talk to the person directly through the unit. Video and audio is decent.

The one thing I didn't realize (because I didn't do enough research #spaz) is that you need to have it hooked up electronically to your doorbell shit if you want to be able to just view live video. The battery isn't powerful enough on its own. But I got that taken care of and I can sit here in my TV room in the basement and click on the live view and watch it if I'm waiting for someone or whatever. Nice feature if you have a loud large dog and kids.

My house is laid out as such that I can't really see who is at the door without revealing myself. I loathe "solicitors" or what have you. I flat out sometimes will let them see me and just walk away. My wife hates this. She will answer the door if it's Comcast. This gives me a solid way to hide out and peep who might be at the door without my dog going beserk. I can wait for a ride while chilling in my basement. I can order late night pizza on my cheat day and watch the street. I can spy on my neighbors from the cozy confines. It's pretty great.

BTW, I'm definitely interested and saw a few different versions while at Best Buy recently. I get a shitload of work related packages delivered to my front and side door from FedEx/UPS. This would be nice to see who is knocking on my door (and spazzing out my dogs).

I don't have a doorbell though. I assume I can just pull up the app anytime someone knocks. Charging the battery sounds like a bit of a pain, I'll let that thing run out constantly...any idea how long it lasts?

Battery life - it says 6 months to a year before needing to be recharged. Charges via micro USB, so basically a phone charger. Unless you're a stupid hipster that uses Apple products.

Nordy, you don't even have wiring for a doorbell? It is nice to be able to use the live view.

LWS, yeah it integrates with Echo and all that other smart stuff.

Oh, and it is secured to the mounting bracket with 2 star bit type screws, comes with a special screwdriver. That's so no one just grabs it and steals the unit out of the bracket. Other than that it's just pops off the bracket.

Not quite as bad as WBH, but over teh weekend I'll try to do the TL:DR version.
Saturday - Drove probably about 150 miles, my daughter threw up in the car, and the battery died at one point, my son hit his head on a wooden crate at a Gymboree, and I left my clubs in my car, while using my wife's car, without noticing until I was 5 minutes away from home at 8. That was 45 minutes each way to get my clubs. Sunday the battery finally dies, I buy a new one, not noticing until too late that the battery I have has 100 month warranty and was only 2 years old. Say fuckit and replace it anyway. Monday morning driving to work, and my car starts shaking with the engine light flashing at me. Take that in, fortunately just an ignition coil.
I did shoot a 38 on the front nine Sunday morning though.

Just a quick 3 day Bahama cruise. Leave on Friday come back Monday morning. Nassau, Coco Cay, I think and done.

Never really realized it till now, nope, just checked, no doorbell. Not even a broken one, no buzzer at all.
