The good news is, though, after the star freshman participated in shooting drills with his teammates and did some separate halfcourt work in practice Thursday, head coach Tom Izzo said it was the most he's done in the month since he last played.

"He's doing really well," Izzo said of Bridges. "What does that really mean? There's such a fine line in this whole thing, too. We're calling specialists, guys that have been through it -- Duke and different places -- but every human body is different. ...

"He's gotta run more. Conditioning-wise, he has killed the bike, he has killed the (upper body) machine, but I watch him go through a layup line and it's just different."

Bridges hasn't played since Michigan State's loss to Duke back on Nov. 29. In the last week, he's ditched the boot during practices and started doing more shooting and other basketball-related work. But the Spartans are purposely taking things slow with Bridges, for his sake and for the sake of a team that has survived without its best player but will need him in the heart of Big Ten play and down the stretch.

"He's so excited to get started," Izzo said. "I can't go on what he thinks; I can go on how he feels, but I still have to make a decision that will be -- believe it or not for me -- very educated as far as other people and what they think, what people have been through and what our own doctors say.

"We just want to make sure it doesn't linger, but he's getting closer."

What are the results from the MRI he had or was supposed to have? I don't get it.

I say hairline fracture. I'm not a bad ass, opposite actually, but played my last game with one my sophomore year. Hurt like a bitch. Then didn't play basketball till January. About 6 weeks to heal.

Plus, in a strange way I am enjoying watching our team try to figure out how to score without him.
