It's time to move the 3pt line back in the NBA
Starting with the 1994-95 season, the NBA moved the three point line from 23 feet nine inches to 22 feet. Three point point attempts went up significantly. Attempts per game had been steadily increasing, but the number was small. With the move, attempts jumped from 10 in 1993-94 to 17 in 1996-97. After the 1996-97 season, the NBA moved the line back to its original distance of 23 feet 9 inches. Attempts dropped in 1997-98 by four per game, but have increased every season since. In 2005-06, the league wide average was 16 attempts per game. In 2016-17 that number is 27. On an average night, an NBA team will attempt 27 threes.
Houston shoots 40 per night and makes 15. Chicago is at the bottom of the league. They only average 21 attempts and seven makes. Three point attempts now account for just under 1/3 of all shot attempts, and teams are making just over 1/3 of those attempts. The three point shot is clearly a high percentage shot now. It has become a low risk/high reward shot. If you looked at each three point attempt, I would not be surprised if many of them did not come right at the line. On fast break attempts, the shot is usually well behind the line.
The biggest impact - and this has been the case for a while - is that everything is right at the rim or a three point shot. At least it seems that way. There was the time when a three point shot was a low percentage shot, but shooters are so good now that the distance is increasingly less of a challenge. The lack of a game between the lane and the perimeter is getting pretty boring.
So what do you think? Should the NBA move the line back? If so, how far?

I went to a Harlem Globetrotters game recently. There was a 4 point line at about 40 feet. The NBA should consider this.

NBA should let the players do Harlem Globetrotter rules.

I care and that is all that matters. OTPT used to to care. I don't think he does anymore. I think we need more NBA threads here.

What do you do with corner 3s if you move the line back? No room to move the corners, so do you eliminate them? Already shorter than the above-the-break 3s.

At the Globetrotters game, the 4 point line basically just went out of bounds.

I'm on board with it. We need a bigger court and a longer 3 line. The players have caught up to the game. Nothing crazy but things that will help. Adam silver knows what's up he will do what's right.

Travis is going to love another proposal to change things up in one of the games he enjoys, so let's do it.
