Anyway, we watched No Country For Old Men and watching that film was quite frankly bizarre. The picture was eerily similar to a soap opera. Incidentally, my aunt gave us a 50" Samsung when she moved and we have the same thing. So I did some research and it's a common phenomena and it's called the soap opera effect. Anyone else notice this?

Yeah, I've noticed it, but never could put my finger on it. That's exactly some movies/show looked like - filmed like it was a cheap soap opera. I mentioned to the wife that it must have been shot like that on purpose, although I didn't call it the SOE.
Even for someone like me who really isn't that picky and doesn't really give much a shit about some technology, I'm surprised that I noticed it and it actually has a 'name'.

It's on the settings and can be turned off. Maybe dynamic picture.

We should do some gay porno (you and me) and watch on your new TV

Yeah I don't like that. I turned it off long ago on my TV. It feels like you're watching CCTV footage of something in the next room. Really kills the vibe of shows.
