It's actually hilarious to watch these economic policies that try to help union members but won't. Instead they are so afraid about unions funding Democrat candidates they'll just stick with all the right to work legislation that just weakened union's further and hilarious excluded public working groups that voted/ funded Republicans.

General Motors shares tumbled Wednesday after the largest U.S. automaker cut its profit outlook for the year, citing higher costs for raw materials and unfavorable foreign exchange rates in South America. Steel and and aluminum prices have been on the rise since the Trump administration imposed tariffs on the auto industry's two key raw materials.
The automaker now expects to earn about $6 per share in 2018, down from its previous forecast of $6.30 to $6.60 a share. GM shares were down more than 5 percent premarket trading.
Rival Fiat Chrysler on Wednesday also cut its outlook for the year and its shares were down nearly 8 percent before the market's open. Ford, which reports after the market closes on Wednesday was down more than 2 percent.

Open Jobs Outnumber US Unemployed For 3rd Straight Month
The Labor Department said Tuesday that job openings barely increased, rising 3,000 to 6.66 million. That's more than the 6.56 million people who were searching for work in June. It's also close to April's figure of 6.8 million, a record high. Overall hiring slipped to 5.65 million from 5.75 million, and the number of people quitting their jobs declined slightly to 3.4 million from nearly 3.5 million in May.
The figures reflect a robust job market. The unemployed typically outnumber job openings, but that reversed this spring amid strong demand from employers. Businesses are optimistic about the outlook and stepping up hiring in anticipation of solid future growth. The economy expanded at a 4.1 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the fastest pace in four years.

Retail Sales Easily Beat Expectations in July
Retail sales for July rose 0.5 percent, substantially beating the 0.1 percent consensus expectation and marking the sixth consecutive month of gains. Over the past 12 months, retail sales are up 6.4 percent, the fastest pace since 2012 (see chart). The details of the report suggest that U.S. economic growth is maintaining strong momentum, supported by consumer spending and a robust labor market.
Productivity, which has had very small gains or even retreated in recent years, rose 2.9 percent in the most recent quarter compared with the prior quarter. That topped expectations for gains of 2.5 percent and was far above the paltry 0.4 percent increase in the first quarter.

Yep that trade war is killing us....
The Federal Reserves New York State manufacturing survey also highlighted economic strength and showed no signs of stress from tariffs or anecdotal reports of parts shortages. The survey came in at 25.6, moving higher when economists had expected a decline to 20 from the prior reading of 22.6. The survey asks 200 manufacturing executives for their views on business conditions.

Walmart makes headway in battle with Amazon as online sales soar
Walmart is making headway in its pitched battle with Amazon, with its online sales soaring in the most recent quarter.
Online sales in the U.S. leaped 40 percent, a sign that Walmart's aggressive moves to bolster its e-commerce business by ramping up the fashion, adding thousands of new choices, and scooping up other, niche sites, is paying off.
Physical stores held their own as well during Walmart's latest quarter, which spanned May through July. Sales at locations open at least a year rose 4.5 percent, the biggest uptick in more than a decade. as shoppers flocked to their local Walmart to pick up groceries, clothing and seasonal items.
Not only did more customers head to their stores, increasing foot traffic 2.2 percent, they spent more while they were there. "We're getting new customers,'' Greg Foran, CEO of Walmart U.S. said in a media call Thursday, "and we're getting existing customers to put an extra item in’’ their shopping carts.

Or maybe the number of poor people forced to shop at Walmart keeps growing thanks to decades of shitty Republican policy?
And of course one of the main reasons poor people remain poor is because every time they get "a bit more $$ in their pockets", they spend it.

Ding ding ding ding. I don’t think that even occurs to the people that want to say it’s that the number of shoppers hasn’t grown, just the amount each shopper spends.

What Truckers & Railroads Just Said about the US Economy
by Wolf Richter • Aug 16, 2018 • 20 Comments
It’s cyclical.
The transportation sector is a reflection of the goods-based economy in the US. Demand has been blistering across all modes of transportation. Freight shipment volume (not pricing… we’ll get to pricing in a moment) by truck, rail, air, and barge, according to the Cass Freight Index jumped 10.6% in July compared to a year earlier. This pushed the index, which is not seasonally adjusted, to its highest level for July since 2007.
