How Soon We Forget Empty How Soon We Forget

Post by Turtleneck Tue 3 Jun 2014 - 19:51

Four years ago today, Armando Galarraga had a perfect game stolen by way of a terrible call. Nothing more. Carry on.

Too bad replay review of calls wasn't adopted 10 years earlier.

Won't ever forget it.  I was listening on the radio on my drive home.  When I got home, I got the whole family together for the last inning.  It was a travesty.

It's hard to imagine that anyone else will ever have a more memorable 1 hitter though. So he's got that.

Talked to a guy that actually admitted that he left the game early. Has business tickets, goes to a lot of games and wasn't really paying much attention. Thought it was odd that the concourse was so empty as he was going out. Heard the tremendous roar and then the booing when he was outside Comerica Park then heard what he missed when he got back to the car.  How Soon We Forget 3069395473

He got hosed big time. He likely received more attention because of the blown call than he would have for a perfect game.

I was in Alaska when it happened and the only news stories I heard about the 2 weeks I was there were the BP oil spill in the gulf and Galarraga.

Mind boggling also that it wasn't even what would be considered a bang-bang play. The guy was clearly out by half a step.

Nitpicker.

Still, arguably the biggest blown call in any major sport in a non-playoff game

I'm not mad at Jim Joyce. First, everyone knows gallaraga threw a prefect game. Second, Joyce sobbed on the field when he realized how bad he fucked up and openly apologized to the tigers and the fans. What else do you want from him besides not blowing the call? He's a good guy.

As it happened, I hated Jim Joyce, even though I didn't know his name yet.

But the news came out quickly that he was willing to look at the replay, and comment on what the call should have been. He agreed, right away, that he fucked up.

Most umps would have refused to look at the replay, and refused to comment at all. Joyce took the heat, and Gallaraga immediately forgave him. That was enough for me.

In contrast, look at how the ump reacted when Miggy got thrown out of the game a week or two ago. He was called for a 3rd strike when he checked his swing. He appealed to the 3rd base ump, but the plate umpire was so pissed that Cabrera questioned him that he overruled the appeal right away. Not many people know that the home plate ump has to allow the appeal to the other umps to make the call on a check swing ruling. That's just BS. That's a guy that is telling you he doesn't care if he's right, he's telling you not to question him.

it was a travesty but I respect the hell out of Jim Joyce (and Galaragga) for the way they both handled it.. the look on Joyce's face the next day at Comerica said more than words ever could.

Meh, I still place some blame on Joyce especially since he argued so vehemently with Cabrera right after it. Good for him for admitting his mistake, but what was he supposed to do when video showed just how wrong he was?

The most blame has to fall on Selig, though. If baseball ever should have (and could have because it didn't actually alter an outcome of a game) went back and fixed an umpire mistake, this was it. I'll be so glad when the Selig era is finally over in a few months.
