How much of that is for the players, or do they get individual contracts?

HAHA!

College sports is a slimy business. Funny how all of this goes down in the name of 'higher education'.

I predict someday a college player will be guilty of murder and will still suit up and play.

That's more than what Saban is making, and Kentucky basketball makes half of what Kentucky football makes in terms of revenue. This is insane.

Yeah, but Kentucky saves a shit ton of money by not having a football program.

UK doesn't care. He got them their title and the NCAA doesn't have the balls to ever strip someone of an actual title no matter what happens. Maybe eventually they'll have to vacate the 2014 runner-up season for some reason, but the NCAA would never touch their 2012 title.

Figure 18 home games, 23,000 attending each game @ $45 per ticket = $18.6m per season.

Obviously box and concessions and parking revenue are not considered as well as illegal boosters.

To me it looks like a fairly good ROI.

Seeing this debacle on my lower TV. Where does it end? Are we hypocritical for being gung ho on big time college athletics and Spartan basketball/football yet thinking some of this stuff is way out of bounds? Slightly, I suppose.

I do like that Izzo won't deal with handlers, and tries to keep shit on the up and up. But he is fighting a losing battle, and those of us hoping and pretending that this thing can remain on the up and up are also fighting a losing battle.

I prefer the way our guys do things to the way the Cals and Sabans do things for sure. But they're both operating in shades of gray. We can be proud that we're taking advantage of the system but not taking advantage of it to the agree that total scumbags like Cal are? I guess.....

Rambling, slightly drunk. Wife went to bed hours ago. Sounded like fun to share. Get off me!

Interesting tidbit in a story about the Billy Clyde Gillispie era at Kentucky:

Jones: I think fans and the Athletic Director realized that it has got to be a slam dunk, so they were gonna interview three people this time. Billy Donovan, (Michigan State coach) Tom Izzo and (Memphis coach) John Calipari. Donovan canceled the interview right before. Izzo upset Louisville in Elite 8, and UK decided we can't wait for him to get past the Final Four so we're gonna hire Cal. Cal has been perfect for UK but if Louisville won? Kentucky might have ended up with Izzo.

Gary Parrish just told the most John Calipari story ever

Parrish recounts the story, which he says he heard from five different sources:
“100% true, John confronts this guy in Vegas, because he heard the guy was yapping. He confronts him. Cal approaches the coach and says something like ‘Listen, I know what you’ve been saying’
‘No, I haven’t been saying–‘
‘I know you did, I know you said what you said. I’ve heard it from enough people, but I want you to understand one thing. Yes I am the type of guy who can come in at the last minute and take any player I want from you. You can spend your whole life recruiting a kid and at the end of the day, if I want him, I’ll get him. If we want him, we’ll get him. Don’t ever get that confused. Be appreciative every time I don’t come in and get your guy. Don’t accuse me of cheating when I do.
‘I didn’t say–‘
‘Yes you did say that. And it’s fine, but just understand, nothing stupid went on. It’s just that I’m me, and we’re Kentucky and we can come in and get that kid whenever we want.”
Any guesses on who the recruit was? Here’s the podcast if you want to listen and judge for yourself. The story about Cal starts around the 38-minute mark:

In the comments people say it's Bruce Weber or Mick Cronin.

College sports at major schools has become so lucrative the NBA and NFL are having separate coaching tracks.

No need for a coach to jump to the pros for cash.

Well. it's true. Kentucky football doesn't compete in the SEC. They just play in the SEC. They haven't finished with more than five conference wins since 1977, and they had losing conference records in two of the last four seasons. Stoops and Calipari both suck.
