U of M Free Tuition
University of Michigan to offer free tuition to some in-state students
Bold move.
The University of Michigan will offer free tuition to in-state students whose families make under $65,000 a year. The move was announced during a board meeting Thursday.
The move is part of the drive to increase access to the university.
Bold move.

Very nice. As much as I dislike their athletics programs and loathe their t-shirt fans I inversely admire the school and recognize the asset it is to our state as a whole.

Yeah, I agree, and I hate to say it's a nice counterpoint to a certain university being in the news for all the wrong the reasons in 2016-2017.

Re: U of M Free Tuition
umaa has an endowment fund of $10.5B and Northwestern ($9.65B) has had the same policy with the $65K parameter for about 5 years.
MSU's endowment fund is $2.25B. Ohio State's is $3.58B
Both have less wiggle room but with an additional $6B-$9B in their endowment funds both schools might join NU and umaa.

Now, if they would just lower the academic requirements to "GED Completed", the majority of their fanbase MIGHT have some hope of attending there some day.

There is probably something to this. I'm sure there was a cost/benefit analysis done vs. academic performance and kids who would actually qualify academically. I still support the move. Good PR and good for society when it fits. I would love to see the numbers a few years after the policy is in force.

Do they even accept in-state students any more?

Jf SF,
Here's a link from 2014 and the dance umaa admissions was doing. I don't think a lot has changed.
Way back when Blanchard then England were Gov. MSU's presidents and Wayne State's president, the late David Adamany lobbied to get more state funding and take it out of umaa's hide because the state was spending more for aa while they were accepting fewer instate applicatants. At the time MSU and Wayne State got more funding and umaa kept theirs by admitting more instate applicants.
Just less than 50% of umaa freshmen are instate. They are saying because MI has fewer HS grads with its stable/shrinking population their pool of students is smaller. Its bullshit but i don't think umaa is being held to the previous agreement.
SawGreen is dead on with watching how this will look in 5-6 years. They will calculate how many middleclass and lower income applications they get and arrive at a magic number.

Fuck, I would've gone to um if this were the case 5 years ago. God that would've been glorious, being a diehard MSU fan on their campus the past few years when we owned them.

Re: U of M Free Tuition
Still comes down to how many of their instate undergrad applicants will come from families with $65K or less and will be accepted.
5 years ago my youngest's HS class of 240-250 had about 15 who chose MSU and an equal amount chose umaa. Of the 15 that went to umaa, 2 or 3 would have qualified for the new program.
You are lucky enough to have a National Merit Scholar and income meets the criteria someone else is already paying that scholarship.
Not belittling the statement but when it comes to the number who will be accepted and qualify might be a much smaller than you initially think.
The cynic in me says its also a great way to recruit instate talent for a lot of umaa teams. Give scholarships to out of state talent and instate kid qualifies for free tuition, a 2/3rd scholarship.
