I have nothing agains soccer if that's your thing, but I'm already weary from having it shoved in my face. This isn't about this thread, which I'll likely not visit again. It has more to do with Twitter now taking up a 1/4 of the page with updates, and all the other media that think it's important I should stay informed.

I really enjoy the pageantry of soccer; but the sport itself is so mind blowingly boring.

What would be more shocking -- the U.S. winning their group this year or the Miracle on Ice?

Has anyone come across a decent PDF of the schedules of matches that could be printed out and easily referenced? I have looked around a bit and everything I have found is the suck.

And this is the issue. We suck. Got no chance.

I'll watch for entertainment and root for the US but other than that I don't really care. But still fun to watch.

When does this shit start already? I've been hearing about it for three weeks. It's gotten more hype than the Super Bowl.

I'm going to go with winning the group. I appreciate what the hockey team did, but maybe I just can't grasp how enormous that was. I'm not even sure the US is supposed to win a game in their group.

I wonder if they'll televise the riots, or if you'll have to find them online in other places. #YAN

If Brazil wins, it'll be non-stop partying in the streets and politicians will be praised for bringing the WC to Brazil.
If Brazil loses, there will be massive rioting and everyone will be blaming the government for wasting all that money.
I'm sure CNN/Fox News/MSNBC will have you covered either way.

So is Fifa as corrupt as the IOC? Is this why they hold the biggest event in soccer in a city that is rioting?

They're holding it several cities. But no, that's not why they're corrupt.
The fact that the next two World Cups are in Russia, and then especially Qatar, are examples of how corrupt they are.

True. I should have said that the next two World Cups were AWARDED to those countries. There's still hope that the corruption over Qatar will cause it to be nixed and moved elsewhere.tTy wrote:

Re: World Cup Thread!
I was going to start a World Cup thread today, but got tied up with work, so I was glad to see that tTy beat me to it. There's a good WC thread on tRCMB (about the only good thread going over there), but tSwill needed one, too. Let the haters get it out of their system.
The World Cup is the greatest sporting spectacle in the world. It's kind of like the Super Bowl being played 64 times over the course of a month, in terms of the worldwide interest and grandeur surrounding every match. Hats off to ESPN for such extensive coverage. I know that will annoy some of you, but fucking deal with it. It's only a month every 4 years that it's rammed down your throats. ESPN won't be doing that so much in 4 years, as it will be on FOX then.
Unfortunately, the World Cup does often provide ammo for the soccer haters, because there is so much pressure on the teams that the games are often far more defensive than you see in the various domestic leagues around the world.
