I saw Brazil released their squad today so I figured it’s time to get the thread started.

It’s obviously a huge sham that it’s in Qatar. Bribes, corruption, slave labor, the whole thing is awful. Talk about that as you will if you want, it’s a part of the story. It’s also a damned shame that they moved it to winter because of this. You see players, who are currently playing highly competitive matches picking up 2 week injuries that knocks them out of the World Cup. That is terrible. These guys get 2 or 3 chances to play in a World Cup in their careers, if they even qualify (Italy ) and it’s getting ruined because they tweak their hamstring at the wrong time. Horrible.

Anyway, who do you all think is gonna win? What do you make of the Americans chances to get out of the group?

For what it’s worth, I think it’ll be Brazil. They haven’t won since 2002 which must be a point of national shame.

Yeah, so Im going to rant about the whole thing.  I'm so tempted to boycott it, but I know I can't just ignore a soccer event of this magnitude.

It's just such a shit show.  I know I'll be getting livid every time FOX or someone does their propaganda fluff pieces about the country and the tournament, and how they'll never fucking sat a word about the 6,000+ laborers that died building the stadiums, or how people are tortured and killed just because they are attracted to people of the same sex.

I just ask that everyone keep in mind that the entire event and much of the coverage is for the sole purpose of Qatar trying to make you forget about their disastrous human rights abuses and their financial and political support of Saudia Arabia's relentless bombing of civilians in Yemen.  

Enjoy the games, but please, no don't forget about the monsters behind it when the media are blowing sunshine about Qatar.

As for the games, I'm kind of feeling like Brazil will win it, which I don't really want to see because Neymar is a bitch.  But that would be a million times more preferable than Messi/Argentina winning it.  England winning would be annoying as he'll, too, but fortunately they still have Southgate as manager, so that's not likely.

I'm going to watch for the stories of visitors getting arrested for drinking and not hiding their sexuality. I honestly can't believe the seats are sold out and people would put themselves in a position where their celebration could lead to their arrest.
This is the same country that strip searched random women who were laid over in Qatar because a baby was found abandoned. I think this is also the same place a woman reported a rape and she was arrested.
I have some interest in watching because it will be on everywhere, but fortunately I'm not a die hard fan.
I do like the world cup though, dammit.

They're not REALLY sold out. Many games are, sure. But for the less interesting games that won't have a big draw, the Qatari government will round up people to go (granted, that's the least of their offenses, but part of the propaganda). I've also heard that Qatar is literally paying people, including non-Qataris, to root for the Qatari team, so that they have full stadiums of almost all Qatar "fans". When Qatar played in the Gold Cup in the US last summer, they tested this out and had Americans dressed in Qatari garb cheering wildly against the US. It's just weird stuff they're doing.

I root against teams with United players, especially this year. The sooner they're done, the better. I'm happy if they do well personally. Like an ideal game would be for Bruno to score a hat trick for Portugal, all three on assists from Dalot, Ronaldo benched with sand in his vag, and Portugal lose 4-3.

I root against teams with United players, especially this year. The sooner they're done, the better. I'm happy if they do well personally. I always kind of like the Netherlands. They usually dont have many players that annoy me, and often have a few that I like. They have one United player (Tyrell Malacia), but I don't think he will be starting for Netherlands (and he isn't first choice for United), so a deep run is fine by me.
