very few songs are able to capture the emotions, the imagery and the austere melancholy stirred by this particular tune. Not only do I credit Lightfoot for the lyrical content - which in and of itself is a classic short story that should be studied in American schools - but the musical accompaniment is perfect..
the almost dirge-like tempo has a certain waltz resonance to it.. long slow notes that swell like the Lake Superior waves.. interspersed with the whining, piercing guitar notes and chords.. evoking almost an emotive panic that those aboard must've felt.
it's truly a perfect song - poetic prose set to music that awakens the emotions.
