Yeah, that’s about 9 lbs a year. We’re ingesting so many hormones it’s rediculous. Slaughter houses are actually having trouble figuring out how to cut it up.
“, experts say, U.S. ranchers now produce more beef at a lower cost than they did 40 years ago, even though herds have shrunk by 13 million.
But larger cattle also means larger muscles. For restaurants and grocery stores, that has proved a challenge.
“It’s a lot more work for our meat-cutters, I’ll tell you that,” said Travis Doster, the spokesman for Texas Roadhouse, a steakhouse chain with more than 400 locations.”

disturbing.
I pretty much mock the Whole Foods folks relentlessly (for good reason most of the time), but when we do meat we almost always get it from there for a variety of reasons including animal welfare, absence of antibiotics, grass-fed, no additional hormones, etc.

It’s sad. Child cows need to get outside and play more and put down the video games and raw milk

I think cows down here are mostly for dairy, so I suppose this isn't relevant to the thread, but Florida cows are a lot thinner than those Michigan heifers (and I'm not only speaking about UM's co-eds). Probably a natural reaction to insulate themselves from the cold up there, or they sweat so much down here that they don't build up as much weight.
However, to the point of the thread, while I know a lot of hormones are injected in to them, are there other factors, as well? Breeding, for example. Not to be the Jimmy The Greek of cattle, but if you get a big bull together with a big cow, it will likely have a big calf. Also, better feeding, better care (before the slaughterhouse anyway), etc. Same kind of things that cause people to get bigger and stronger over time. Again, I'm not at all discounting hormones, as that's a big jump over 42 years, but I wonder what the natural increase would be without hormones.

Try to eat more vegetables in my 40's. Looking into getting a good juicer as well. I just want to eat healthy and stave off the aging process at this point.

Some of those are children that are skewing the average though. They probably gained between 150-200 pounds per person over that time. So I don’t think that’s fair.

I don't really keep up with such things..Turtleneck wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote: I hope I can die a happy death.
It's funny when people say they only eat meat that has been humanely slaughtered. It makes zero sense.
but, according to my wife - who is much smarter and more knowledgeable than I am - the methods by which an animal is slaughtered for consumption can impact the levels of stress hormones found within the meat and those stress-related hormones potentially can have a detrimental impact on the person consuming the meat.
so I'm told. Maybe the fine folks at Whole Foods and similar peddlers of consumable carcasses tell folks that to make us feel better about spending more money for it. I don't know - I just shovel the driveway and mow the lawn.

we usually buy it in bulk - so a few cartons of blueberries sitting at room temp might over-ripen over the course of 4-5 days. I restock it all every 2-3 days, though - rotating everything.
