More than two-thirds of Great Lakes area covered ice

More than two thirds of the Great Lakes total area is covered in ice, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Labratory posted a map online Tuesday morning that shows 69.1% of the Great Lakes covered in ice.

That’s only the second time that much ice covered the Great Lakes in the last 24 years, according to a WOOD-TV blog. The other time was 2014.

Lake St. Clair has the most ice cover at 93.6%, followed by Lake Erie (90.7%), Lake Huron (81.3%), Lake Superior (77.1%), Lake Michigan (51.3%), and Lake Ontario (15.3%).

Maybe around the inlet to the river, but I don't think a lake that big would be affected by one river... even one that big.

Why Won't Lake Ontario Freeze Over?

The expert listed three reasons as to why the lake sees less freezing than its four counterparts:

Lake Ontario is deep, so it retains more heat than the other four lakes.

The Niagara River feeds water into Lake Ontario from Lake Erie, providing agitation which keeps the water's surface from freezing.

Its geographic location protects it from the brutal temperatures that Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan experience most of the winter.
