Not Catholic but the subject fascinates me. There's the no meat on Fridays thing many follow but others go beyond that.

Ex-SIL is first generation Italian-American. She excludes all pasta from her diet, except on Sundays.

Know a Chaldean guy that eats nothing but raw vegetables sans any dips, dressings, or seasonings. Also fasts 3 days each week, only consuming liquids of the non-alcoholic sort. In his 40's now and says he's been doing it since he was 7.

My in-laws are Catholic and tons of people I work with give up stuff for Lent:

-pop
-alcohol
- bread
- gossip
- Facebook
- sugar
That's what I can think of at the top of my head of what others have told me.

As a kid it seemed that everyone gave up chocolate/candy or pop. I never really consumed those in enough quantities that giving it up would mean anything...so I never gave anything up and continue that tradition so i'll see you all in hell
