Overkill. I don’t need an exit wound the size of a volleyball. LOL Besides, a little tracking is part of the fun.

The location of this mind boggling. It's a long, long way from the U.P. to Calhoun county and it's also one county up from the Indiana border. Indiana hasn't seen a grey wolf in the wild since 1908.

Someone's pet? Malamutes are part wolf. 50%?
Think I'm wrong about malamutes, but I have heard, not sure of truth, of cross breeding malamutes with wolves.

You willing to charge the guide also?tGreenWay wrote:I hope the shooter gets charged for killing an endangered species. IDGAF that there was no expectation of seeing a wolf in Calhoun county. The hunter even had a guide with him. Two sets of eyes should have been more than enough to know what he was aiming at was way bigger than any coyote.

The guide should be fined, yes. Between the two of them, the guide should have known better. These aren’t felonies. As someone who has hunted since I was 12 and been with all types of ethical and sketchy hunters, my educated guess is these guys knew what they were shooting at. They probably agreed they’d only get a hand slapped because the wolf was so out of range.

Re: Wolves or coyotes?
The size difference is something like 15 pounds for a coyote verses 60 to 80 pounds for a wolf.
Maybe shooting across a field without seeing the entire animal, and not thinking "wolf" because it shouldn't have been there, but once it was dead and being carried, they knew what it was.

kingstonlake wrote:A fully grow coyote would be difficult to distinguish from an 80lb wolf. Especially if you’re not use to having to do so. My experience is they just act different. I’ve only seen two wolves in my life and they both had an agenda. It was weird. You could just tell. Probably both tracking something. I’ve seen a million coyotes and they’re just exploring. Scavenging maybe? Cautiously curious. If I were in Calhoun county the last thing I’d think I was shooting would be a wolf. I mean it can be hard to tell the difference. It’s not like there’s a wolf season in Michigan and people see them all the time. They’re reclusive.
It is so hard to tell the difference between brown & gray. /s

Read an article saying shenanigans are afoot. The wolf is from the UP/Wisc/Minn pack group and there is no way it could have swam the straits which hasn't froze in years. (or vacationed in Chicago)....
My guess is the dumbass actually shot it up north, brought it back, then bragged about it on the facebook saying he got it near his home.

Good Grief - it sucks that Republicans are all in on selective law enforcement, but how is this political at all.
Someone shoots an animal which looks very little like the animal they were hunting, (much larger & gray verses brown) 90% sure it wasn't a mistake, however under the law that does not matter, and lawmakers want an exception.

Trap wounds. Very interesting.
"Trap wound" of that nature if it were some sort of jaw trap seems pretty low on the leg to have held a live wolf, would think if the wolf had any time in the trap, it might have pulled free or just left the bottom of that leg in the trap. Also, would think that any trap with enough force to hold a wolf would have crushed the bones.

I wonder why the farmer whose land they were on, claims that he thinks it might’ve been there for over a year? What proof does he have? Did these hunters have a connection to him? They were hunting on his land. Also, They say there are hundreds of Trail cameras in the area, If it was there for a year, you would think maybe one of them would get a shot
Hunter, who shot the Wolf, is either the greatest actor I’ve ever read, or very naïve, but he comes off as being woefully, ignorant of the laws of Michigan.
It doesn’t matter if he didn’t know it was a wolf, if you are walking out in the woods with a loaded gun, you better know what you were shooting at
