It's almost like they want to build batteries close to existing manufacturing facilities.....

General Motors and a joint-venture partner plan to build an electric vehicle battery factory in Lansing, Michigan, their third such factory in the U.S.
The companies' plans were revealed Friday in documents posted on the city's website. They say the plant would cost up to $2.5 billion and employ as many as 1,700 workers.

Seems like the Governor & the Republicans have found more common ground, which will happen when people work together on harder issues like a state budget they both agree on.
quote from article - The news Friday came as Michigan lawmakers and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration, partially inspired by the prospects of the GM project, are racing to create a major new economic development program. The initiative, which could gain final legislative approval on Tuesday, would allow the state to provide funding for large projects to improve sites, to acquire land and to distribute "economic assistance" to create jobs.

11 billion of Ford money to create 11,000 jobs in Tennesee.
If this were a basketball game Whitmer would be behind 11-1. And not even counting the Toyota money going to NC.

you'd think all the republican majority shitheads in house would have passed a bill or something to help get these plants. It took a big kick in their ass to get them to see that lowering business taxes wasn't working.

Sorry, this is on Whitmer. Lack of leadership in working towards a business environment that is attractive to investment.
But she was likely busy partying maskless at the Hotel Washington bar or flying private to FL while telling her serfs not to leave the state.

Free federal power for a battery complex that uses 5x the amount of a traditional factory.
Yeah. Whitmers fault.

You have such a cartoonish view of Whitmer. Meanwhile, the leader of your party is an actual cartoon character - and you voted for him twice.

It has been established (see covid response) any strict executive action would be immediately shut down in the legislature... this is all on those with the power, the Rs in the majority. They failed you're quest for battery plants RQA, you shouldn't vote for them anymore.

The good out of all this is that the Republicans, following Governor Whitmer, have come around to understand that this is a state-by-state competition, and that lower business taxes are not the answer, in general.

Why the hell isn’t the “conservative” troll RQA moving to that job paradise Kentucky? He might get a helluva deal on some land that need to be cleared.
Maybe move to job heaven Texas or employer friendly Florida?
You know it’s a schtick because no one so motivated to post like he does would stay in a state like MI that’s done so many things he opposes for at least a dozen years.

I like living in Michigan. I like the climate. I enjoy being around my favorite sports teams. My family is here. My business is here.
I see no reason to move just because our governor is an idiot. My response to that is to help elect someone better.

Bitch Bitch Bitch about how poorly a Democrat in the governor’s chair is responsible for KY giving away the farm to subsidize battery and auto assembly plants but never wants to move to KY or other places that routinely pick winners and losers.
11 years ago the poster calling themselves RQA was very critical of then Gov. Granholm, Senators Levin and Stabenow for choosing winners and losers when LG announced construction of its lithium battery assembly plant in Holland MI.
https://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/2010/03/lg_chem_to_build_1st_north_ame.html
Trump cheerleader RQA remained silent on LG’s Nov 30 2021 announcement that they are going to expand production the Holland MI plant adding on using the 40 acres they own next to their existing facility.
But that isn’t bad news for Trump’s Pom Pom boy

And this post proves why attempting to project private business decisions on the current elected officials is at best shortsighted, but really just partisan vomit. If the entire government (like passes a bill govt) will give away the farm (ie, Wisconsin's ill fated foray into chip manufacturering)... then you can "blame the govt" otherwise it's just stupid. While I have said there is an element, and maybe a big element, of politics in major corporation's choices for major plant locations, certainly for the defense industry there is, it appears that the Michigan State government had its hands tied when it came to competing for the new Ford & GM plants. The use of government to make land available and provide tax abatements may not have been the only issues, as lower power costs, due to TVA, and proximity to raw materials may have played a part.
Michigan changed its business tax law back in 2011, and we, the citizens of Michigan were told this would make Michigan highly attractive for new business investment. It is clear that was not nearly enough for the major sort of investments that Ford & GM are making. It is good that these events have been a kick in the pants for the State government and both the Republicans & Democratics are on the same page one this.

The bills passed late Tuesday night after a lengthy session as lawmakers and the administration worked to shepherd the package through before the Legislature breaks for the year. The legislation heads next to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk.
Whitmer praised the package in a statement after the vote, calling the economic development fund critical to creating tens of thousands of new jobs.
“Thanks to the effective collaboration of legislative leadership in both parties, our state will be competitive for every dollar and every job for years to come,” Whitmer said.

The too little, too late part is due to both sides of the isle.
Seems like after passing a huge tax cut for the rich in Michigan and a huge tax increase for the poor in Michigan the Republican legislature went to sleep on keep business in Michigan.

Final Assembly Plants are located all over the country, and all over the globe, so not sure what you are saying is correct.
Major Tier 1 Suppliers have their plants all over the globe, too.

Probably the same reason leftists favor buying cars built at non-union car plants. (documentation can be provided if requested)
I have a friend who grew up in Michigan but now lives in CO. She was involved in an on-line discussion about the Kellogg strike and made the comment "growing up in a union home, I sympathize with the workers". I replied: "don't you drive a Subaru?"
