Does the speaker of the house have to be an elected member? Just wondering if the democrats and about 20 republicans can make Liz Cheney the speaker. How fucking awesome would that be? I really think the speaker does not have to be an elected rep

Best guess is that is unclear, probably need to look a Madison's notes from the Constitutional Convention.

A quick Google search comes up with several results saying that the Speaker doesn't need to be a a member of Congress, so it may be pretty clear, even if that means it isn't explicitly said.

The Constitution doesn't specifically say, which has caused the (conspiracy) theory that the Speaker could be someone who is not a member.
However, Madison's notes may provide more as to the thinking.
Then there is the complication that The Speaker is part of the line of sucession for the Presidency, if both the P & VP die the Speaker becomes President, which leads to Trump being made Speaker and Putin having the Biden & Harris killed.
A Speaker who is not a member of the HOR would not vote, of course.

There’s really no need to look at Madison’s notes when you can just google it and find out that indeed they do not need to be a house member

Whether it's Cheney, McCarthy, Jordan, or whoever, it would be the same on regular policy.
But a Speaker Cheney may be able to temper some of the bullshit that Rs want to do to kiss ass to Trump and the lunatic fringe, like impeaching Biden and half the cabinet.
Same if the Dems backed an anti-Trump Republican that is a member of the House.

It isnt that hard to find that it isnt some obscure idea buried deep in Madison's notes, and it sure as hell isnt a conspiracy theory that the Speaker doesn't need to be a member. It's the actual US Government's official "Guide to the Rules, Precedents and Procedures of the House".
https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-HPRACTICE-108/html/GPO-HPRACTICE-108-35.htmSpeaker Chosen from Members
Article I, section 2 of the Constitution directs that the House
choose its Speaker and other officers. The Speaker is the only House
officer who traditionally has been chosen from the sitting membership
of the House. Manual Sec. 26. The Constitution does not limit his
selection from among that class, but the practice has been followed
invariably. The Speaker's term of office thus expires at the end of
his term of office as a Member, whereas the other House officers
continue in office ``until their successors are chosen and
qualified.'' Rule II clause 1; 1 Hinds Sec. 187.

That is "only" a HOR rule, not the intent of the members of the Constitutional Convention. As a HOR rule it probably would not be challanged, and there is no judical body which can overrule it on Constitutional grounds.(The Constitution stipulates that the HOR shall establish irs own rules, thus the courts cannot be involved)

They can’t do anything on their own. Maybe letting them let their freak flag fly instead of moderating them ourselves isn’t the worst thing in the world. Why should we bail out the Republican Party that can’t get its shit together? Fuck em all I say.

Sort of garbled up there guys, but I think I understand the point.
The idea of the minority party plus 1 electing the Speaker is that coalition becomes the majority. The majority sets the HOR rules, commitee leaders and agenda, which become a compromise between the Speaker and the minority, now majority party.

My point is that I think there are enough moderate republicans to get this done just to piss off the republicans. No matter if it’s McCarthy, Biggs or Cheney it’s going to be a two year shit show. Cheney would make it more entertaining.

Right, meaning that there is no need to look at Madison's notes (as if there is some secret writing that no one has ever seen), because it is completely and totally Constitutional.

I get it.
I guess what I’m saying is to let them flounder for at least awhile first. Let them show just how incapable of governing the Republican Party is before helping them by electing some republican douchebag whose only reason for praise is that they do not want to destroy the government and make trump king for life. Let everyone see the clusterfuck.

Everyone who studies the Constitution in detail, and some of us who don't, know about Madison's notes. It would be interesting to know if there were discussions on this point, but since the current HOR rules define it, it doesn't matter, much, although the incoming House could change that rule.

I don't know who these people are, but gathering from the room decor I can assume they ARE the echo chamber... any chances they see the irony in that?
