Born in Milwaukee, but by the grace of god became a Spartan.  

We were Milwaukee Braves fans.   Hank Aaron.  Unfortunately, they moved in 1966.  My household was without a major league team.  In the mean time, my dad got a coaching gig across the pond to Coleman Michigan.  Vern Ruhle was a tight end for him in football and he also did a little bit of pitching for him in baseball.  My dad had three guys off of one Class C team in Coleman that made the majors.  Vern being the most famous.  

The gap between the Braves leaving and the Brewers entering in 1970 really left the house with no team to cheer.  Vern gettng drafted by the tigers, and getting called up to the bigs in 73/74 really kind of cemented us as Tiger fans in our house.  We had moved to Manistee by then.  My dad took me to a couple games in Chicago.  

One game I got down in the tigers dugout pre-game, Ruhle lifted me over the wall and walked me down into it.  Still have a team ball autographed by everyone in there, including Norm Cash, Ed Brinkman, Ron Leflore, Aureilio Rodriguez etc.  It was a glorious day and it was pretty cool having Ruhle call my dad coach in front of everyopne.  As you can guess, that cemented me as a tiger fan my whole life since.  

Mom has the ball in a china cabinet in Manistee, I'll take a picture of it next time I'm up there.  

So, ask an old man a question,get the lonnnnnnnggggg version.  Go tigers, they've been breaking my heart for every year skip one since 1974.  

Talk about weird, I'm pretty sure it was 1974 when Ruhle made me a guest in the dugout.  10 short years later, I'm in the bleachers at tiger stadium 1984 and celebrating world series victories that fall.  It's been 40 years since.  Oh my god.  What are we doing here.

His mom and my mom remained friends after we moved from Coleman. She died same year as my dad. Still lived in Coleman.

Houk's 75 team lost 19 games straight and I watched or listened to them all. Then came the exciting 76 team with the Bird. 4 starters in the All Star game. Fidrych, Jason (rooftop) Thompson, Rusty Staub and Ron Leflore. After that in 77 Trammell and Sweet Lou were called up and the beginnings of a championship team were born.

Matter of fact I bet I haven’t listened or watched 21 games in a row at any point in the season in 40 years. First time I’m fairly familiar with the line up and pitching probably since 87. Tv or radio has been on every game.

Of the three one run games we’ve lost I think we could have/should have won two. (I’m not doing it for the ones we’ve won because fuck that).

I think we’re not that far from a playoff team. I’m not sure this roster is. But this team won’t embarrass us. (I know I just slapped the jinx on).
