Regressed a little this year but very solid previous.
I don’t know who this dude is but Miinny has played solid D under Fleck. They haven’t been winning on QB play.
Looks like a good hire.

That’s okay, I’ll even things out. I plan to hold Smith accountable from the opening snap and intend to dangle him over the edge of the upper deck at SS if his teams fail to perform to my liking. #acceptnothingless #perfectionnotdeflection #trophyme
If the team so much as loses a coin toss, I'm going to be launching an aggressive letter-writing campaign to get him fired.

I love the 3-4. I for one welcome our new boat rowing defensive overlord.

The thing about the 3-4 defense is that it can't be worse than the 4-2-5.

Rossi’s 3-4 seems different. Like a big run stopping nose isn’t needed. I’ll need to see if I still have the Minnesota game taped. It’s like you have two traditional tackles I guess with a stand up 4th lineman. Seems like the Hall and Windmond types are made for it, but who knows.
I just think we’ll see our guys put in place to at least make a play. I gave up trying to figure out what the fuck we were trying to do on defense or why. As I e said a billion times, I don’t think film study was required by our last staff. Or we just had low iq football players.

Re: Jonathan Smith is an "A" hire
Smith took his time finding a DC for MSU after OSU’s DC Bray took the HC job in Corvallis rather than join Smith in EL.
Rossi knows the conference and he’s 44 like Smith. Sure Rossi is going to get a significant raise and he won’t have to be in the same coaching meetings with PJ Fleck who always seems to be 2 expressos past the limit.

I am hoping his defense at MSU sees less rowing and more punting.

It’s a positive in that Smith has had time to look at the receiving corps to get an idea how well they were coached. No doubt he got a second opinion from our incoming DC. Hawk probably has strong contacts with HS coaches and that is a big deal. A familiar face within a new regime can keep some doors open and help guide the new staff. I like it.

Salaries
Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, hired away from Minnesota, will earn $4.8 million in base pay over his contract, starting at $1.5 million in 2024 and increasing by $100,000 over each of the following two seasons. Rossi also will coach MSU’s linebackers.
Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, who followed Smith from Oregon State, will make $1.1 million this season and also get $100,000 more each season in the last two years of his contract. That comes to $3.6 million over three seasons for Lindgren, who also will coach the Spartans’ quarterbacks.
Offensive line and run game coordinator Jim Michalczik is set to earn $1 million in 2024 and $1.1 million in 2025. Three other assistants who received two-year deals — secondary coach Blue Adams, running backs coach Keith Bhonapha and defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa — will have base pay of $525,000 in 2024 and $575,000 in 2025. Tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Brian Wozniak will make $450,000 this season and $500,000 the next. All four came with Smith from Oregon State.
On Thursday, MSU released the two-year contract for special teams coordinator/defensive ends coach Chad Wilt (who was not retained by Indiana). He will make $350,000 in 2024 and $450,000 in 2025.
Hawkins is still under current contract $425k. Expires March 31st.
Martin hasn’t been negotiated just yet I think.

Re: Jonathan Smith is an "A" hire
The anecdote Smith passed along to hundreds of coaches last week about taking a measured approach was just one nugget in a 45-minute presentation that didn’t get into X’s and O’s. He cited advice and mottos learned from those he worked with in more than two decades on the sideline, a former university president and a Hall of Fame softball coach. It all feeds into what he has already absorbed and is implementing in East Lansing following a program reset.
“Can’t make it perfect, but will work to make it damn good,” Smith said of the broad approach to overseeing more than 100 players and roughly 50 total staffers.

Damn. A detailed presentation, and I have to imagine there are at least a dozen thick binders in there somewhere. We hired Captain Holt. That's not a complaint by any means.
