It's comforting to me that Saban still thinks about the 99 team as often as I do.

Half that list seems unlikely. Would Norvell, Lanning, Deboer or Sark leave what they have going to a pressure cooker. Wash may have been a flash in the pan with Penux.
Dabo seems the most realistic. Relationship at Clemson seemed to be wearing thin.
It seems like the shine has worn off Dabo post Watson/Lawrence and he's been exposed as not as strong of a coach as though (at least that's how ACC people down here in Miami/FSU country see it, which could be bias). But I wonder if fans and donors are Bama would be excited by him at this point.
UDub for sure. Curious to if their recruiting takes a dip. A lot of guys came to Bama to play for Nick and prospect of getting to the NFL. He got guys on a discount. They’re going to have to work a little harder next year ($$).

24 hours ago If I was the AD Byrne, I’d seriously consider Florida State’s HC Mike Norvell. He took over FSU and went 3-6 COVID season in ‘20 to 13-1 in 4 years.
Today I see the NCAA is going to sanction FSU and reportedly dole out significant penalties. So much for Norvell being the next Alabama coach.
And so it goes.

Saban has a guy who just goes around opening doors for him, and judging by Saban's look, this guy was sloppy today.

Can’t decide what’s more surprising: That it takes two troopers to escort Nick to his car, or that he doesn’t have a driver.
And yes, big fail on the human door opener. Saban’s quick words to him before getting behind the wheel were this: “You’re a dead man.”

OK, DWags story time. One year when he invited me to coach at camp, it was a shortened version of the camp. It went either Sunday through Wednesday or Monday through Thursday, I can’t remember. There were a few campers and fewer coaches. Our morning meeting consisted of his staff, and maybe about 5 to 7 of us. I honestly can’t remember if that was the camp that Mel Tucker also coached at but he did coach at one of them.
Anyway, his assistant, at the time, phone carrier, ass kisser, door opener, notebook carrier was a guy named Mike Volmer. Really nice guy. Very organized. Saban abused him. On my children this was true. One morning at the coaches meeting, it was raining like crazy crazy, no big deal we will be indoors I thought. For some reason, and I can’t remember, Saban
wanted to do things outside. Oh, well, I thought, Quick change everybody comes indoors. On my children this is true. Sabin came in and was yelling at Volmer because it was raining. I can’t remember what exactly he was yelling about, weather, forecast, or “should have fucking known”, but I do remember I was very scared. I just looked at my handout and never looked up and didn’t want to make eye contact with anyone. Especially him. That guy needs to vent once a day I think. I wonder how he stayed married all these years. He doesn’t drink which I think is good for his family.

You can absolutely tell by the body language of the guy as he walks away, Saban did not feel that his door opening conformed to "The Process" that day.

Just happy he’s not going to umaa. Maybe he’ll flame out, maybe he was only as good as however Penix played each game, but I doubt it. He seems organized, focused, and all business, and I’d hate for all that to be what

If Booger leaves UM (and I'm personally having my doubts that he will), it feels like they are going to go with the coordinator that took over for Boogz during his suspension, or Mike Hart. I'd be comfortable with either of them taking over the program.

I think Harbaugh stays at UM. Penalties for sign stealing will be light, and the level I infractions for recruiting will be downgraded to level II. This opens the door for him to stay.

Met Mike Vollmer once at an event down here with Mark Staten the summer after MD was hired. Agree very nice guy. Talked extensively with him. He gave me TWO hats (I know how you love hats, Dwags). I think his role at the time was some type of Associate AD attached to the football program. Not long after that he got hired by Alabama and reunited with Nick. I guess Nick liked that he would kiss his ass and put up with his shit.

He was mostly in charge of getting visiting coaches to a restaurant or venue at night a d picking up the check. I remember him as grey hair way too early in life. I found out why lol. Lots of coaches Saban abused seemed to want to stick with him. I guess it’s the dues you pay to be around genius.
I heard he was back with Saban. But then he went to UOFM. I think he has a good background in construction projects for football. In other words besides kissing Sabans ass he spearheaded improvements to football facilities at both MSU and Bama. I assume he went to Michigan for something like that. I don’t know when he slept. Seriously, dude walked three steps behind Saban at every practice with a cell phone at the ready. Always enjoyed his company and insight.

He gives a look and says something. Probably “that was a shitty job opening the back door son”. Even on his last day is coaching.

I was always afraid of him too. Coached three of his camps and in that time he never said much to me. Twice I got him into animated discussions. I used my history back ground and during stretch when he’d walk around I got my nerve up to ask him where he was during the Kent State massacre. He stopped and looked me in the eye a d gave me his whole run down of two hours of his life that day. What struck me was that he remembers a ton of details. I imagine something like that you don’t forget. He said one of the victims had class with him. Probably the most annimated he ever was talking to me.
I often wonder if he’d remember me if I ever had the occasion of bumping into him. I’m guessing probably not. But maybe.

I've told my close encounter story with Nick before but will tell it again. Boo Boo Thompson comes into the bar and gets in a fight that spills outside. Like 5 frat boys try to take him on in the street and he wipes the floor will all of them within about 2 minutes. cops show up and Boo Boo takes off running east on Grand River to MAC where he runs full speed into a cop car. Like literally into the car and rolls over the hood. Anyway, Boo Boo gets arrested.
The next morning I get a call from Saban. He would like to see me in his office to discuss the incident. I walk in and he brings it instantly. Didn't even shake my hand before he went off.
"What the fuck kinda place are you running?!!" At first I was intimidated but after a few minutes I fired back "What kinda kid are you recruiting?" Then I left. For those that don't know, Boo Boo Thompson was charged with first degree murder in 2007 and later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Fast forward to a Perles Special Olympics golf outing in 2008 and Nick is there. I introduce myself and ask if he remembers me and the Boo Boo incident. He says yes and was actually fairly cool. He kinda apologized and said if I ever needed anything to give him a call. I never did

The portal is packed with Alabama players. Maybe Tuscaloosa without Saban isn't so great. Lots of teams are going to benefit from his retirement in a lot of different ways. The #1 ranked OT from the 2023 class just entered the portal, so it's more than 27 now.

This is the latest news in a troubling, if unsurprising, trend for Alabama. According to 247Sports, Downs would be the 27th Crimson Tide player to hit the portal. In total, Alabama is losing a large recruiting class worth of players.

Re: Saban retiring
How many end up staying? Maybe 50% or more.
Saban had 44 NFL 1st rd picks and 123 players drafted. A lot of those players knew they had a legitimate shot at being drafted because NFL personnel knew how they were coached for 3-4-5 years.
Saban's gone so they're talking to former Saban assistants who are now HC's at Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss. Then there's the rest with healthy NIL account.

I think they are losing more than expected, Trapper. Around 10 have entered the portal in the last 5-6 days alone, including their top tackler and top returning receiver. Worse, this is not just a bunch of players downgrading to smaller programs to try and find playing time. They have lost 3+ players to multiple major programs, including Texas, FSU, UGA, and OSU.
Overall I do agree. It would be hard not to. Player exodus is the new norm. I like the idea of empowering the players, but this is really messy.

Mike Shula might want to leave snowy and frigid Buffalo to revisit the Deep South of Alabammy.

Alabama Has Full Class Worth of Players in Transfer Portal in Wake of Saban RetirementThis is the latest news in a troubling, if unsurprising, trend for Alabama. According to 247Sports, Downs would be the 27th Crimson Tide player to hit the portal. In total, Alabama is losing a large recruiting class worth of players.

Players came to Bama at a discount to play for Saban/chase NFL dreams. Those days are gone.

They postponed tonight’s Sabers game because of more weather related travel restrictions. This wouldn’t happen in the up north area of Michigan.

Re: Saban retiring
i mean if there is any time a player should be able to transfer, it would be when their coach retires/leaves, no?

Re: Saban retiring
Yeah, I think so. Players should not have to play for a coach they didn’t commit to.
