In the old days it was Newark College of Engineering....and was/is an excellent school...I was lucky enough to have taken classes there and worked in the Chem E department in the summers for 2 years.

But App State was a 2 time FCS National Champ so they had some credibility. NJIT had never even played a top 25 team prior to today.

No program in the country faces the recruiting realities of NJIT. "Hi son, want to play college basketball, but not really play college basketball?" When the Highlanders' fellow low-major programs recruit athletes, they're at least able to sell the dream of making the big dance.

The Highlanders, meanwhile, draw about 600 fans for home games and the only dancing they'll be doing is at the club. That puts the proverbial chip on the proverbial shoulder.

...said NJIT sophomore guard Damon Lynn, the Highlanders' hero with 20 points and six made 3s. "They get to play in a conference tournament at the end of the year. We get to practice. I'd prefer to play."
