According to the forecast, it's not supposed to get above freezing in the Detroit area for at least another 10 days. Not sure it's been above freezing all month

It is awesome outside. I love all of this snow. This is my second winter in WNY, and this is closer to the area's reputation than last year's winter. Snowshoeing tomorrow. Not sure where yet.

NY is expensive. Property taxes are especially high (in places) and there are not many breaks elsewhere.
However, overall, I really like it here. It is a great place to live.

Rochester/Geneva/Finger Lakes is expensive?
It always feels exactly like Michigan to me - cold, run down cities, lakes, beautiful summers. But I just fly in and out on business a few times a year

Last year at this same time I climbed and camped on Mt. Marcy for a night. It wasn't quite as cold, though... it was only -5. But clearing out 4 feet of snow to set up a tent was an interesting experience. Ever climbed any of the Adirondacks, TN?

If you like backpacking there aren't too many better spots east of the Mississippi than the Adirondacks.
Campground camping is still better in Michigan but upstate NY is gorgeous.

http://taxes.about.com/od/statetaxes/a/Property-taxes-highest-lowest.htm
The county with the highest property taxes in the nation was Monroe County, New York where residents pay 2.89% of their home value in property taxes. Camden County, New Jersey, the only county on the top ten list that was not in New York, was ranked at 8th. Camden County residents pay 2.50% of their home value in property taxes.

Re: Wat's yer temp?
Property taxes from state-to-state are bizarre. An old State roommate lives in northern California and purchased a number of houses pretty cheap when the market was down a few years ago. He spruced them up and turned them into nice rental properties (passive income). Some of them now appraise for 2-3 times what he paid for them but the property tax on them doesn't change. CA's property taxes are based on the last selling price. In other words, you could have bought a house there 40 years ago for $50K that might be worth $2M now but are only taxed as if the property is still worth $50K.

If taxes are a must that's how it should be. I dig that.

Monroe County does have two of the top 100 public high schools in the country (both in Pittsford), and 3 in the top 200 (Brighton). Depending on where you live in Monroe County (I do not live in Monroe County), your tax dollars give you something in return. However, NY just has way too much government. Not only do you have intrusive state government taxing and charging you for everything but breathing, there are so many layers of government in this state.

I grew up here, so I'm biased, but it's a pretty great area to live in.
Rochester has a lot to do during the summer in terms of festivals (particularly the jazz festival). Buffalo's pro sports are a reasonable drive away. The Finger Lakes are awesome during the summer and fall, especially with all the wineries. You're also a fairly easy drive (like less than 6 hours) away from a lot of cities (NYC, Philly, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh). Fall here is just awesome, and I think you get some of the best fruit around in Upstate NY (especially the apples; a NY-grown Empire, Macoun, or Cortland off the tree is perfect, IMO).
The only downsides are, the taxes and that the winters can be overbearing some years. I think it's a great place to grow up and raise a family, but I really want to get out of here (though that has nothing to do with the area itself and more has to do with getting away from some people I know here).

Good luck. I'm looking for a job too and it's been tough. Hopefully you're hired and then you don't have to worry about it anymore.
