Ethical question Empty Ethical question

Post by Tim Wakefield 2015-03-06, 02:36

Ok so the asshole thread got me thinking about a (stupid IMO) conflict in my life and I want some outside perspectives on this scenario:

My friend let me borrow his Halo 3 game. I had a phase 2 summers ago where I bought/sold video games and consoles on craigslist to make a quick $20-40 a couple times a day. Well on one of my listings someone asked if I had Halo 3 and offered $20 for it. So I check gamestop's website and see that it's worth $10. So of course I sell my friend's game for double what it's worth (who the fuck wouldn't?).

He doesn't ask about it for months so I figure he forgot about it. We were hanging out one day and I told him the story and of course said I would go buy him a new copy, thinking it would be funny. Well he flipped out on me and still brings it up to this day, saying how much of a selfish asshole I am. Really makes me laugh that he's so hung up on it when 1) I made a free $10 and he should've been happy for me, 2) he never played the damn game anyway and forgot I even had it, and 3) he got a new copy of the game anyway.

No but you should have had the replacement bought before he asked for it.

Yes, but your friend is overblowing it if he's still hung up on it.

It really wasn't yours to sell, and you kept the profits, not him. I don't think it's actually selling it, but more the fact you did it without asking so that you could profit from it.

He should be over it, but I can see where he's coming from.

You sold something that wasn't yours without asking. How is that not stealing?

the fact that you logged in to ask a bunch of internet degenerates if you violated a principle of ethics leads me to believe that you probably answered your own question..

I don't think he said anything about playing it. And halo 3 is a classic.

I have never played Halo 3. Or Halo 2 or Halo 1. I just know it is something IT people do instead of their job.

It's a dick move. It's kinda girlish of him to keep brining it up. That said, you should give him the game back plus the $10 you made off of it. You might think it's only a few bucks, but how would you feel if I did the same thing with your car and made a few thousand?

Because fake/real is completely irrelevant on an annonymous message board. Unless of course that guy really is Tim Wakefield, in which case it might matter, but not really.

Definitely wrong. What if that game was a present and special meaning to it?

Not your property and wrong.

Mark this one up as a learning experience.

I did. And bought him some beers to help him get the massive amount of sand out of his vagina.

For the record Halo 3 is the greatest 360 game of all-time
