So this Germanwings flight crash is royally messed up...

But that goes against the entire concept. Passengers aren't going to standby and let someone intimidate their way into the cockpit anymore.

Let's just admit we need to to back over the adjustments we made barring cockpit entry after 9/11. The best way to stop a threat on a plane is to have passengers that are aware. After 9/11 people aren't going to stay seated if they see people trying to force their way into the cockpit.

Maybe. If they know what's going on then maybe they do something. Maybe.

A way better way of doing things is the way it works now, except you make it impossible to lock out the pilot. Instead the pilot that is outside of the cockpit can use a different passcode which locks the cockpit and makes it impossible to open from the outside. That way, if someone is trying to force their way in, the pilot who is being forced can just enter a different code to lock the door down. Pilot inside can continue flying in that scenario. And in the suicidal copilot scenario, he can't stop the other pilot from getting in.
