Apparently the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane. They have the cockpit voice recorder and could hear the pilot begging the co-pilot to let him back in the cockpit. They can also hear the passengers screaming.

Jesus.

Here is what I don't get. There is an emergency code the pilots and attendants know to re enter the cockpit if whoever is in there is rendered incapacitated. But, you can also disarm the override from the cockpit thus not allowing the override from the outside to work.

What's the point of having an outside override if the person inside can just screw with it so it doesn't work? scratch

It prevents someone without the code from using force to compel someone with the code to get in.

A question at the press conference was why a crew member isn't required to be in the cockpit when one of the pilots gets up for physiological reasons (to take a piss). The answer was that there was no answer for that. I think that would be a good idea. two people in the cockpit at all times.

That is the rule for US flights.

There's an outside code to override the cockpit door but that can be overridden itself by the person inside the cockpit. scratch

You already asked about this and someone already gave you a perfectly logical reason for why that's the case. I'm shocked you didn't read it.

But that goes against the entire concept. Passengers aren't going to standby and let someone intimidate their way into the cockpit anymore.

Let's just admit we need to to back over the adjustments we made barring cockpit entry after 9/11. The best way to stop a threat on a plane is to have passengers that are aware. After 9/11 people aren't going to stay seated if they see people trying to force their way into the cockpit.

Maybe. If they know what's going on then maybe they do something. Maybe.

A way better way of doing things is the way it works now, except you make it impossible to lock out the pilot. Instead the pilot that is outside of the cockpit can use a different passcode which locks the cockpit and makes it impossible to open from the outside. That way, if someone is trying to force their way in, the pilot who is being forced can just enter a different code to lock the door down. Pilot inside can continue flying in that scenario. And in the suicidal copilot scenario, he can't stop the other pilot from getting in.

Gun to the head of a pilot with the code outside the door? Gives the pilot inside power to override hijackers attempts to get into the cockpit.

Really not that hard to figure out.

All these thoughts on different procedures but a wise man once said 'you can't fight crazy'.

Hard to make safety features to get around the person in charge (or co-in charge) being crazy. A bus driver could drive a bus off a cliff if he's nuts.

We have drones now... human pilots should be phased out. Automation for flying seems like it should be a reality (with a human on standby just in case). Logistically more possible than automated cars, I'd think.

It is a reality, most pilots do f all these days. The best crew is a pilot and a dog, and the dog is there to make sure the pilot doesn't touch anything. Are you imagining the pilot is there pulling back on a yoke like Maverick or something?

A German prosecutor says Andreas Lubitz, co-pilot on the Germanwings planed that crashed Tuesday, was "declared by a medical doctor unfit to work." The letter was found torn up in a trash can in Lubitz's apartment. The focus of Tuesday's tragedy, which killed 150, has shifted to the 27-year-old co-pilot's mental health.

You do know that humans are behind the controls of the drones, yes? So your suggestion doesn't really solve for the problem if the guy at the controls is nuts.
