Do You Say "Thank You" Twice When Someone Holds Two Doors Open For You in Rapid Succession?
I always do - as a good 'ol southern boy whose parents would kill him if he were anything less than polite - but it always seems a little awkward.
"thank you"...{less than a second later}..."thank you"...

I try to time it so I'm saying "thank" for the first door hold and "you" for the second one.

I remember one time at MSU I held open a door for some angry looking feminist, she went to the second door on the left, opened it herself and walked on by. She mad bro!

do you say it after the first door or the second door.. are you invested in the process and want to make sure the person follows through?Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:Only once here, Bob!

I think if someone opens a door for you, then you're supposed to get the next one.
That's just common sense.

I know what you mean.. and I agree. Puts everyone back in their initial position.NigelUno wrote:I think if someone opens a door for you, then you're supposed to get the next one.

but I was referring to when they walk through and sort of hold the door open behind them.. and then they do the same with the second door.

First door. Then it's usually a smirk if they continue the door holding with the 2nd.

Revolving doors are more energy efficient and do not create this problem.

I'm always afraid I'm gonna get trapped in those things.. find myself sucked into a vortex of an industrial-powered whirling dervish entrance/exit mechanism with windows for all the world to see... to point and laugh and enjoy my plight.Turtleneck wrote:Revolving doors are more energy efficient and do not create this problem.

Or some weirdo is going to jump in the space with you instead of waiting for the next open space.

Yeah. This is America. It's not Europe. Get your own slice of revolving door.

they sort of make me anxious - I have to time my movements and that makes me uncomfortable. Same with escalators. I'm not much of a dancer.Turtleneck wrote:Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:Those revolving doors suck.

Yes, I do. No way do I wanted to be indebted to some stranger over a single thank-you. What if I go to my death-bed still owing that polite jackass? You think St. Peter is going to let me through the Pearly Gates? "I'm sorry, sir, but you died owing Fred Farmbottom a thank-you. You'll have to go through the red door. Watch your ass."

Why is it, that when faced with a double set of doors, half the idiots going the opposite direction want to use the door on their left, which is the door on my right?

Door 1: Fuck
Door 2: You (or Yes, depending on my mood)

This. But it's not just any old nod, it's the knowing nod of thanks and recognition.Tim Wakefield wrote:'Thanks' and then a nod after the 2nd
But what about door holding techniques? There's the stand to the side and hold and there's the walk through and hold open just long enough, and then there's the ever popular walk through, stand to the side, and hold.
I'm partial to the walk through and hold open just long enough. If you're too slow, sorry Charlie, it's partly about you, but mostly about me. It says, I'll help you as long as it doesn't inconvenience me too much. I don't think I deserve a thank you for that and I don't look for one.
Of course, if the person behind me is carrying something that might make door opening difficult, then I do the go through, stand off to the side, and hold even if it inconveniences me. I'm a dick, but I'm not a total dick.

Yes, Bob, I do. But then, I'm just an idiot like that. I usually take the second door as an opportunity, if the mood strikes, to say something to actually make the other person smile.
Y'know, if I can come up with it on the fly. Which, right now, I can't.
