That's the default mindset of the right anymore. Maintain just enough plausible deniability that when they're called on anything, they can be all "Who, me? Why, I was just joking. Can't anyone take a joke anymore? Why are you so sensitive?" or "I'm not a racist, I just occasionally employ 'racial humor' that's all in good fun."

yeah, as I mentioned, it's an attempt to get the attention that they don't get in other aspects of their life. Kind of filling a void or filling in the cracks of the developmental part of their id/ego.

think of a toddler or a child being neglected by parents (either intentionally or unintentionally) - they'll raise their voice louder and louder, eventually becoming agitated or even destructive.. anything to get that attention they desire.

the thing that devastates them the most is when nobody notices.

yep - and while it's easy to feel vitriol against people who are so vitriolic, it's important to remember that if we want to encourage them to become more decent representatives of what we know to be traditional American values, we have to provide them a comfortable place to land.

So, I have almost the opposite issue. Where I live I'm one of the few actual white people around. I think most people assume that I support Trump, because I'm a middle aged white guy. People tip toe around the subject with me, until I mention that Trump is a fucking dumbshit and I can't believe he's our President. At that point, people open up a bit more with me.
I'm not even sure my daughters classroom has a true white kid in it. She is the only one, that during Spanish, a teacher has to take her to the back of the class and they go over basic Spanish.

we went to a football game at my high school 2 years ago.. she was in the student section (talk about culture shock) with one of my old friend's daughter.. I was sitting with my Dad.
