Watched The Martian and The Revenant today
Solid efforts. They'll probably give D'ancaprio the Oscar for a dialog free performance.

I really liked it. I just wasn't aware that hypothermia didn't exist in that era.

Re: Watched The Martian and The Revenant today
I thought the Revenant was pretty good, not great. Leo was great as expected but I think I expected more from the overall film. It was kind of predictable. Worth a watch for sure.
Going to watch Sicario tonight.

Re: Watched The Martian and The Revenant today
I watched Bridge of Spies today. That was the worst out of the BP noms by far.
1. Revenant - based Leo
2. Spotlight
3. Fury Road
4. Big Short
5. Martian - mehtastic
6. Bridge of Spies
Going to see Room soon, missed out on Brooklyn.

Re: Watched The Martian and The Revenant today
Granted it's taken me a week to get through but I'm trying to finish up the Martian right now. I really like it. Way better than Sicario. Only got through the first 30 min of the Revenant. I dig this movie. It's long as fuck though.

I always see previews for movies and i'm like "damn I'm definitely gonna go see that". Then all the sudden it's a few months later and i've forgotten all about them. These were two that I wanted to see, thanks for the reminder

Interstellar was surprisingly good
I dug the Martian. Solid flick.
Sicario was solid and had its moments. Del Torro was money. The initial border scene was awesome. But the two FBI agents were awful characters and the storyline was pretty weak.
Fury Road was fucking awful. Not a Mad Max or car chase scene fan so I'm not the target audience. But come one...it's a two-hour fight scene on top of moving cars/trucks. There was a guy swinging from a truck playing guitar the whole time. Watched it just to rip the shit out of it.

Agreed but Jennifer Jason Leigh should have gotten the Oscar for her "Howdy Nigger" alone.

I thought the Martian was pandering. It was competence porn, scenes were telegraphed and character development was beyond shallow. Entertaining in a sense but quite disposable. Fury Road was brilliant film-making. Stunning visuals and true to the Mad Max legacy.
The Revenant was entertaining, well acted and the brutality was well handled, you just had to suspend some disbelief about survival in the cold and wet weather. The film from 2015 that more people should be talking about is Ex Machina. Solid science-fiction, well acted and explored deeper themes through questions of what it means to be human.....

I'll give you the effects on Fury Road.
But come on man. If any of the above movies is "pandering" it is the one with an hour long car fight/chase scene.

Ex Machina was brilliant. I didn't know until a while after watching it that Oscar Issac and Jake Johnson were different people. Seriously, they could be twins.

I go to a Mad Max movie wanting car fight/chase scenes. It is the very essence of Mad Max films right back to the low-budget original. Hour long.....sure, advanced the story, set up the hero moments, the drums on the back of the truck, etc. That's like complaining a Rocky movie has too much boxing......

Ex Machina was brilliant.
The best scifi movie I've seen in probably 10 years. Does what good scifi should: asks timely questions and not in a pandering, childlike way.
Great flick. Especially the ending.

Just saying, that is the definition of pandering.
