Best Dantonio Defense ever at MSU?
Could Michigan State have its best defense under Mark Dantonio in 2016?
EAST LANSING — Michigan State's nation-leading string of four finishes in the top 10 in total defense came to an end last season, but the Spartans could work their way back into that elite company.
"I think we have a chance to have an excellent defense," said Mark Dantonio, who prior to becoming a head coach was the defensive coordinator for Ohio State's 2002 national championship team.
Dantonio said on Thursday's Big Ten coaches teleconference that time will tell, but he likes what he sees. The Spartans return a great deal of experience in the back seven and feature a promising defensive front.

2013/2014 is such a high standard to live up to.

Hey dude, welcome back.
Yes, unless they have two first round corners on the roster, I don't see that defense being better than 2013. TLJMOM

You guys realize at one point we had two first round draft picks playing our corners at the same time right?
I'm excited about the possibility too, but if you takeover a third of the fuel away and allow you lb's to play down hill with a plethora of blitz packages available it's pretty hard to top.

They still haven't given up a point on the season. NOT ONE. Honestly, the 2013 defense can't compare to that. They gave up like 13 points every single game or whatever. They didn't pitch a shut out forever like this years unit has.

I'm sorry, I thought that was a fairly innoccuous joke. I didn't realize this was a serious thread for serious posts only. Allow me to put on my serious face.
I find it very unlikely that the defense will be better than 2013. But they've not even finished spring practice yet, so anyone would just be guessing at this point.
Better?

And there's a very real possibility this defense has multiple 1st rounders on the line including a top ten pick.
Obviously a long shot for them to be better but not outside the realm of possibility.

It will be interesting. We always hear everything starts at the LOS. From stopping the run to making your DB's better because of pressure. We also know if you have two great corners and two very good safeties it allows yo to do so much more with blitzes and games up front.
I'm very excited about this defense. If they are getting that kind of mention, it gets me even more interested.

Re: Best Dantonio Defense ever at MSU?
As usual, we will be tested by the teams on our schedule who can truly present a run/pass conflict. Otherwise, yes I expect the defense to dominate.
I don't know much about the Irish. The only other team that I can see giving this team problems is OSU if they can find balance like they did 2 years ago. Maybe BYU - is Hill going to be back? Do they still have all of those 6'7 WRs?
Not seeing another team on the schedule I would expect to get into the 20s via conventional offense.

Heard Comp on the radio give a flat out "no".
His main point is that you have to have the stud edge rusher(s) that MSU does not have. Maybe there is a chance Cooper could become that guy.
But I also agree with Dwags point about the corners. We aren't going to have two first round NFL lock down corners next year - probably never again.
But we could be better than ever in other positions like LB and DT so if some of those other question marks turn into exclamation points it is possible.

I wanted to chuckle, but it just wasn't funny enough. Plus, DWags doesn't want anyone to enjoy themselves in this thread.

It's time for you to stand up for yourself. Dont worry, though, because DWags is old like me. You can take him.

I don't see how the D-line could be better than last year. I don't see how our DBs could be worse than last year and while they'll obviously improve, not much hope for them to be an elite unit. LBs should be great though. Next year's D may be very good but unless the DBs make an insane jump, don't think they'll be close to Dantonio's top unit.

I think the D Line might shock you. I thought last year's model slightly underperformed. I can see these kids making it a year to remember.

With the exception of the OSU game they did.
