Grocery stores? Not enough people live downtown to support a grocery store.
Housing for families? Why would anyone with a family want to live in a condo/apartment in downtown EL?
Offices would help support a lunch crowd. But parking?
I like the part about seniors. Always seen tons of older folk cruising around EL...

Well there's pretty much a reason why 99% of the graduates move away from EL. No jobs and the town doesn't want them there.
Still a fun place to visit for a tailgate for the time being.

Well, at least they are finally doing something about the shitshow on Grand River & Abbott. Sounds like a new investor took over 4/5 of the properties. Hopefully the Mexixan standoff is over with the other investment group that holds the other piece of the pie.

OF this list only Columbia can be considered a peer to el. They suck for different reasons however. Other than Detroit and Charleston, south Carolina is a fair comparison to michigan over the past 20 years....

EL City Govt sounds like the woman that married the dead beat abusive guy and keeps telling herself and anyone that will listen, 'I can change him'
They knew what they had when they moved there, now they think just because they want it to be different a population of 40,000 is going to bend to their will? Laughable. When are they ponying up the money to invest in the grocery stores, etc? They aren't.

My hometown built lofts and condos downtown like 5 years ago. Pretty sure they are empty since folks would rather have land since they already have convenience

For starters, none have a bordered up block right across from campus for almost a decade. Doubtful they ve both lost prominent restaurants in 2 years, and have you ever made the drive on mich Ave between the capital and campus

As much as this pisses all you people off about the student bars and perceived bias by the council, it takes a considerable amount of diversity to maintain a healthy economic base. From a long term planning perspective on the success of a community the council has it exactly right when they want attract a mix of uses. So you stinkin cheap drunks can kiss my ass.

How much economic diversity do you expect in a town that amounts to six blocks on a strip?

Cool, his new project will get stalled forever at the City Council, he won't be able to get financing because of it and ten years later it will get foreclosed on from back taxes.
