We're up to 3rd.

College basketball rankings: Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks No. 1 in Top 25 (and one)

So now we have:

Tum/Winston PG
Langford/McQuaid SG
Bridges/Jackson SF
Ward/Tillman PF
Schilling/Carter/Goins C

Ahrens really ought to redshirt.

1 Schollie still open.

Will Ahrens still get his Natty ring if he sits out the year?

The more I look at that - and this may be irrational exuberance - but if they all stayed healthy that 2nd team might win the B1GTen.

Louisville was the clear choice for Preseason number one if it had Donovan Mitchell. Without him, Michigan State takes spot with Ben Carter.

NBC Sports rank #MichiganState #1 in their way-too-early College Basketball Preseason Top 25

And NBC had us #1 before Carter.

Averaged 6 rebounds and 9 points in the last season he played. For UNLV in the Mountain West. He's not a star but he's adequate. We'll have 15 fouls there with Schilling, Carter & Goins.

I'll be very surprised if Jackson plays any minutes at SF. But if he does, we could put some killer huge lineups out there. Something like:

PG: Winston
SG: Bridges
SF: Jackson
PF: Tillman
C: Ward

Obviously we could mix and match lots of different PF/C pairings, but that would give us tons of size and tons of skill. We could also put an awesome small ball lineup out there (though Izzo doesn't really do that much, so I doubt we'll see it):

PG: Winston
SG: McQuaid
SF: Langford
PF: Bridges
C: Jackson

But, honestly, I think our best lineup will end up being:

PG: Winston
SG: Langford
SF: Bridges
PF: Jackson
C: Ward

And I think that will be clearly our best lineup pretty early in the season, if I were to predict.

Remember CBS analyst/color commentator Billy Packer? He would say a team needed at least three future NBA players in order to win the NCAA hoops title. I've never checked to see if this is axiomatically true, but our 2000 champs had Cleaves, Bell, Richardson, and Peterson.
Are there at least three future NBAers on next year's teams? Bridges, Jackson, and then ?

JJJ will play mostly 4 I think, I agree with Cameron. He's a stretch 4.

4 will be JJJ/Goins/Carter

5 will be Ward/Schilling

We absolutely need Ahrens, the weak spot on this team is the wing depth.

If we have any injuries among Winston/Nairn/Langford/McQuaid, Bridges should play a lot of SG (so Ahrens would get a lot of SF minutes). If those 4 are healthy, we should be in good shape.

Honestly, I think talent is more important than chemistry. Zel's senior year I feel like the chemistry was pretty good, and the results were obviously not good. Conversely, I feel like the chemistry on the Lucas/Summers final four teams wasn't always the best, but there was a lot of talent, and the results were pretty good. When you have talent AND chemistry, you get the Flintstones. So I agree with you that I hope the chemistry is good, but I think we'll have enough talent to weather the storm if the chemistry takes a while to develop.

Apples to oranges, but your point is well taken. They both matter, I just think, at least in hoops, talent matters more.

ESPN: MSU hoops on way up; UM in limbo

The state’s biggest basketball programs — Michigan State and Michigan — have seen their offseasons shaped by NBA draft.

ESPN took stock Tuesday of college basketball teams that have improved since the national title game last month, which are in turmoil, and which must simply wait.

The Spartans landed in the first category, and the Wolverines are in the last.

MSU sophomore Miles Bridges chose to stay for another season in East Lansing, catapulting the Spartans firmly into Big Ten title contention — at minimum — and even landing at the top of some preseason rankings.

So they aren't going to quarters because of the commercial breaks? It shouldn't be hard to figure out how to have the same number of commercials per game. If anything, two extra natural stoppages should make it easier to fit all the commercials in. Dumb.

Fresh look at Miles Bridges' offseason workout reveals a man in midseason form

Fasihi, who has worked with current and former NBA players Robert Covington, Rajon Rondo, Jae Crowder, Iman Shumpert, Jarnell Stokes, Fab Melo and Vander Blue, said Bridges' athleticism is "already clearly at an NBA level."

Fasihi added, with a laugh, "Man, he really likes to work."

Bridges returned to Michigan on Sunday morning.
