Re: What documentary should I watch tonight
Watched The Last Blockbuster the other day. It was ok, but probably a half hour too long. It felt like the end, and then there was another 25-30 min. I didnt remember how their downfall played out. Everyone says it's Netflix, but they explain why it wasn't.
The other takeaway is that some people have way too much attachment to a bulky, inconvenient, outdated technology. I'm all for retro nostalgia, but kids today aren't missing out.

I think there’s way too many streaming services and they all have exclusivities to certain studios body of work. It’s becoming harder not easier to find older films. I miss the rental stores also the places I went to had curated staff picks which were always helpful.

Heh, they didn't but I appreciated their expertise that's for sure. One other thing about rental stores I think this country was better off when people had to rent their porn. Perverts had to go through the indignity of going into the room and paying for it at the front desk. These days it's too easy.

Yeah, how is someone supposed to get movie recommendations these days with the internet and all.
Also, streaming services do not have exclusive deals to carry movies/studios, unless they're produced by that service (i.e., Netflix originals, Prime Originals, etc.). Â Do they have exclusive rights to stream movies within their monthly sub fees, yes. Â Just like HBO, Showtime, and others always did (and still do). Â But if you didnt have those, you could still go to the video store and rent something that was shown on there, just like you can rent any movie on Netflix on Amazon, Vudu, Google, iTunes, etc. (again, not counting Netflix originals) Â And you have many times more movies to choose from to rent than you would ever get at the biggest Blockbuster store.
This is just another hot take of yours that isn't based in reality.
I suppose the only semi-valid part of your video store take is the porn angle, and you could rent those at Adult stores without having to go to the regular video store.

Highly disagree. Went on a Hal Ashby kick recently and wanted to revisit all his classics from the 70's. Can't rent/stream a good chunk of his classics from anywhere. Never had this problem with video stores. This problem happens to me all the time. It's a definitely flaw to this new era of streaming digital services. You might even recall our chat about a Few Good Men and you impressed us with your memory of the incredible court scene. My wife had never seen that film and I went to Amazon to stream it and wasn't available. I would of had to sign up for another streaming service to rent it.

Had to dig it up but this drives home the point -
"As I've often said, you can shop online and find whatever you're looking for, but bookstores are where you find what you weren't looking for."

Same could be said for the local library, and it wouldn't cost your anything. But that raises the age-old economic debate: spend or save. Krugman side-stepped that one.

Ok, for 99.9999% of people, everything they want is online. Sorry that you couldn't find a specific movie or two from 50 years ago on a single streaming service. I know you're bullshitting if youre saying that the video stores had every movie from the 40s and 50s.
And as far as A Few Good Men, you can purchase it streaming for 12.99 everywhere. If that's not worth it to you to see and own forever, then you don't deserve to watch it. But that isn't because of any exclusivity that it can only be bought, not rented, it is because sometimes the studios choose to only offer it for purchase. Again, no way was everything always in the video stores.
First the complaints about the Grammy's, now this. You really are the out of touch old man yelling at clouds.

Of course you can. the initial article that came from or thread he outlined why independent book stores are doing well this day and age. Vinyl sales are also up. I'd argue these are cultural centers and people value physical media and they also like the aspect of finding what you 'didn't know you wanted'.

Yep, and most streamers will recommend movies based on your viewing habits and your answers to questions it asked like, What type of films do you enjoy watching?
Krugman isnt wrong about bookstores, but he’s not right to exclude online options.

Really, so more than half the movies you ever want to watch are unavailable to rent for streaming. More than half? 51+% of the movies. I'm calling bullshit.

I’m a big fan of wildlife docs. All of those that air on the BBC are great and I’ll always stop to watch at least portions of them on the weekend.
Here’s a list of others available on Netflix:

Netflix still has their DVD delivery and you can check local libraries for classics. Steve sounds lazy.
Also, Hurt Locker is all over streaming services, so maybe Steve also doesn't know what he is doing. It's possible he thinks everything is on the YouTube or the Googles, and if can't find it there it must not be streaming online anywhere.

The Hurt Locker is available for rent on Apple TV+ which is quickly become my favorite platform because it will find where to get the movie you want to watch. Not saying other services don’t do that, I’ve just been really happy with Apple TV+. YouTube TV is great too.

Appreciate it. The other film of hers (Kathryn Bigelow) that I ran into was Near Dark. I love that film. Just looked and still no where to be found. Hey Miami, what I'm defining isn't 'old man screaming at the clouds' I think it would better be categorized under 'Modern Problems'.
