I think the NFL has a rule that you have announce a number change by a certain date to avoid paying, but I could be misremembering.

Seems dumb. Must be some Pitts inventory in stock (because he and the Falcons have underperformed), not to mention Cousins inventory (because he got hurt, although you can't really do anything about that).

Seems petty, but maybe the league is protecting the franchises a bit (I would imagine the Falcons have some Pitts inventory in stock).

I think it's a way to protect retailers/NFL "partners" (like Fanatics and Dick's) who would have some inventory. Any retailer orders from manufacturers (like Nike, New Era, etc...and not direct from the NFL), and then licensing fees are paid based on wholesale prices to the NFL. So, the NFL might be faced with a situation where there might essentially have to refund licensing fees on what would essentially be worthless product (if they allowed players to change numbers without enough notice).

I’m hearing he’s a bit frustrated with the move, but the falcons are lucky. If there’s one guy that can still work hard and actually help the next guy is Cousins. I’ve heard Favre and Rodgers weren’t the greatest help in the qb room to their # 2.
