With arrogance led by Americans like the troll Frozen Man its no wonder the US has a good chance of being a technological backwater dependent on others like Russia has always been.
Solar panels? China leads the world.
EV's? Chinese government investment has the rest of the world buying their components
The Frozen Man's Pax Americana is a 100 years dead.

6 mile run between a coal mine and a port ... coal is really cheap in that situation.

Different issues for different parts of the country.
Califorina has problems with the powerlines causing fires because private businesses decided to increase profits by not doing line maintanance.
Texas has a grid that, unlike most states, is not connected to any other state so the do not have to follow federal regularions. The grid is "managed" by "the market" and thus is open to the manipulation of generating sources shuting down some plants to drive the price of electricity up for higher profits. Also suppliers are unlikely to invest in all weather equipment, which is what caused generating plants to shut down in the winter when prices went through the roof and generating companies made out like bandits.
In the midwest the transistion to renewable energy is the cause of generating plants going off line, however this is due to basic economics. Coal plants cannot compete with renewable plants. Since the grids are regulated while the generating sources are privatly owned the owners of the coal plants are choosing to shut them down. A solution would be more regulation to keep coal plants on line. Ohio tried that, but it was done via bribing the legislature and it has turned into a huge scandal.

Over 25% of US Electricity from renewables so far this year ...
Add in nuclear and over 40% of US Electricity is "green" so far this year.
