tOfficial Computer/Phone/Tablet Help Thread
TL;DR version: Google Chrome & IE keep locking up on my laptop. Anyone have any diagnostics, malware, etc. programs they recommend?
I know there are some techies on the board and I need some help.
Specs:
Leveno Thinkpad
Windows 10
8GB memory
i5 Intel 2.4ghz
SSD
Google Chrome Version 59.0.3071.86 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Not a super computer, but good enough for browsing tSwill and compiling spreadsheets for work. On 6/3 Windows kept bugging me about running some driver updates. I finally conceded and since then it has been running like shit.
Symptoms:
- The first few days the fan would not stop running, which is pretty rare for an SSD. I usually never hear the thing. This has stopped.
- Initially I couldn't connect to my printer (wireless). This has been fixed.
- CPU usage spikes for no apparent reason. Seems like random shit each time I checked it. A couple of days ago my wireless driver was using 30%+ CPU, yesterday something with the display was using 30%+. Neither seem like they should ever be that high.
- Google Chrome locking up. Which has rarely ever happened before. Even locked up in Incognito Mode. This is my biggest issue right now.
- IE locking up as well. I don’t use this as much. Only for worksites that need to use Java.
After several days of restarts, Norton scans, Fonzi taps and blowing on it the first two symptoms went away. CPU still spikes now and then. But it doesn’t seem to correspond to Chrome locking up, which is happening on the regular. Everything else seems OK.
I don't think it is my Wifi (Xfinity). All other devices seem to be running fine. Including my iPad, which is Wifi only. Streaming Amazon Prime/Kodi has been fine...a few spotty downloads on a few things, but that is not uncommon with Kodi.
I've run Norton scans, systems scans from Glary Utilities, ran Malware Hunter, cleared all my Chrome data, downloaded the latest version of Chrome, etc…. Chrome is still locking up. Any other suggestions to try?

My favorite starting point for tracking down rogue stuff is https://www.malwarebytes.com/
If it doesn't turn anything up, my next step is task manager and see what process is consuming too many resources, then figure out what that process is.

I'd suggest that you get the 34e9 whirly-octoplastic Chrome-tastic kevlar iZip unit and connect with a steel-reinforced 456y0 urethranet high-beam/low-rise cable. It really cleared up my issues with my iGiG67-a-byte plasmotron unit.

Download the free version of CCleaner. I run that along with Malwarebytes and SpyBot

Re: tOfficial Computer/Phone/Tablet Help Thread
You may be having temperature issues (fan running & lockup can happen when the cpu gets too hot). Download and run Core Temp or Speedfan & monitor your cpu core temperatures under load. Anything higher than 70C is a problem.
In addition to Malwarebytes, CCleaner, & Spybot (all free) I would recommend:
1. Dump Norton for Windows Defender.
2. Do a system restore to before 6/3 if possible.
3. Run the Windows repair utilities.

If somebody wants to do me a favor and bump the thread for rcmb things, I'll go ahead and merge this.
Otherwise I don't feel like dealing with it and just won't click on this again.

You know what I'm just going to merge it with the most recent thread you started. That's much easier.

We could. But there really isn't that much soccer to discuss. It's the brief off-season.
This goal the other day was amazing though. Think of it as a 40 yard field goal, except you gotta hit it in a 1 yard x 10 yard window from that distance, while running, and in a split second to decide to even try.

You know, we could use a general thread about this. I've lost messa some pretty special people outside of the message board realm, and it could be a bit cathartic and a decent way to honor good people who passed on.

Re: tOfficial Computer/Phone/Tablet Help Thread
Computer weirdness last night. For a while wondered if either I had been hacked or the laptop was blinking out. Rebooted it a few times along with the modem & router. After scans with crap cleaner and spybot detected nothing unusual from the outside figured had to be something hardware. Fortunately wasn't the laptop.
Use a wireless mouse instead of the touchpad. Swapped the mouse and dongle with the ones from the work laptop. All is good again...except my home mouse is dead. First experience with a Logitech product failing.

Nice find on your part, though. I was going to ask how old your router and modem were. I only learned this past year those products only have a life approx. 5 years old. Mine are living on borrowed time.
