Justin Verlander
I'm sure there's discussion taking place in other threads. This shit has reached crisis level so I'm starting a thread.
Is he done?
Is it a temporary setback?
Why is he throwing 90 mph fastballs? The one that Butler hit the double on did not appear to be located poorly. But if my eyes didn't deceive me, it was 90 mph???
Why does he claim that his "stuff is good"?
What do they do with him?
Last 7 starts:
7 ER
7 ER
5 ER
3 ER
6 ER
5 ER
5 ER
I follow these types of things sort of, because I bet on baseball. There is not a single starter in either league who has numbers this poor. Not even Ricky Nolasco. His WHIP is almost 2 in those 7 starts.

Insightful gHost, but I'm certain that's not the case. He's a very competitive dude.

I don't know why about this either. What the hell happened to getting stronger as the game progressed, going from mid 90s to high 90s in late innings?

The Kate Upton excuse is getting pretty lame. Plenty of dudes are nailing chicks just as hot and still playing fine.
Verlander's problem is hopefully temporary, but with every horrible start i'm more and more concerned that we overworked him for years and that it's finally showing up.

I had this conversation with some friends over email a few weeks ago. And perhaps I was just way off, but I'm disappointed not only because of the how and why he can help the current squad. But - I honestly thought he was on a HoF trajectory. He kind of seemed like an all timer. We're talking about a guy who won 17 games his rookie year with a WHIP of 1.3, and who was literally a threat to throw a no hitter every time out from 2009ish to 2012ish. Seemed like he was on a path to win 275+ games.
I really hope I'm wrong but it kind of seems like he's just another run of the mill guy who had a few great years and was wearing down.

You would think that his poor performance lately would maybe scare him into pitching better because I doubt someone as hot as Kate Upton will stay with him much longer unless he pitches better.

Trying to think of someone to compare this to. I was thinking maybe Kevin Brown when he signed that huge deal with the Dodgers but then i looked up Brown's stats and that would have been a slap in the face to Brown.

Re: Justin Verlander
9th full season with the Tigers. His '08 season (11-17 / 4.86 ERA) was his worst but the team finished last in the Central (74-88).
He's always been a power pitcher and in his best seasons he could throw 98mph fastballs past hitters in late innings. I'm only a fan but watching him pitch it seems his fastball has lost movement. There are a lot of MLB batters who can get around on 90-95 mph fastballs that get straight lined to the plate.
Don't know whether he has to go full Tanana but I think Verlander has to become more like Greg Maddox catching the corners and throwing more off speed. Question now is ego. He's been a power pitcher since junior high so he has to decide if he can become a finesse pitcher.

My kid works at a delearship Verlander moves all of his cars through. He met Verlander one time with Kate tagging along. He said she was in sweats and playing with her phone the entire timeBonerland wrote:You would think that his poor performance lately would maybe scare him into pitching better because I doubt someone as hot as Kate Upton will stay with him much longer unless he pitches better.

He asked both Ausmus and Verlander if he should skip a start.
Then ask Ausmus if he thinks Verlander is still tinkering.
He's a hard hitting journalist......

Re: Justin Verlander
Verlander should possibly think about re-tooling his arsenal, much like Maddux and Glavine did. Look what they accomplished with dominating hitters using off-speed pitches primarily.

I predict some sort of "injury" to Verlander. Will miss the next couple of starts and then get a rehab assignment. Won't be sent down, but the "injury" will make him go down. Yep. Sounds about right.

Came back too early from surgery. My hope is that he doesn't permanently **** up his arm by altering his motion to compensate for the surgery.

Re: Justin Verlander
Maybe Verlander wonders why he should be trying so hard risking his arm when a dude like Scherzer is OK with coming out of playoff games.
And Scherzer only finally pitched a complete game because he's trying to get rid of that negative reputation in a contract year.

Scherzer is like the Juan Gonzalez of pitching. Talented but only out for himself. Can't wait until he is gone from Detroit.Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

He is basing that on Scherzer leaving a playoff game before the ninth when he had like 115 pitches.Hut1hut2 wrote:

Makes you realize even more what a complete freak Nolan Ryan was to continue to bring heat the way he did in his later years. I think Justin possibly has to consider retooling his entire arsenal. I would have never thought it, but I have never put my arm through anything like he has.
How long can any human being continue to throw 99 mph in the 8th inning?

He was hanging out at the mall with Upton yesterday. I'm telling you folks, his slump is a direct correlation to Upton. He put up great numbers at the start of the season, then they were photos of them hanging out together and the slump began.
It's just like Buldurham where Nuke is wasting all his energy on Annie.

Nolan Ryan also started every 4th game, instead of every 5th game the way all other modern players do.
But he had perfect form, and his natural pitching motion didn't stress his arm.

Heard Tom Seaver once say that the biggest problem, and why everyone is blowing out their arms is because of the form. Pitchers back then used their legs to drive the pitch.

I'd bet he has close to two years added on the odometer based on the number of pitches he's thrown in his career vs other starters.

A more logical explanation would be he used PEDs at the end of his career. That would explain his "finding the fountain of youth" late in his career.

I think this hits the nail on the head. If JV really doesn't have the hard stuff anymore, then he has to go another route. He can't pitch like he's gonna blow it by everybody anymore or he gets shelled. Hitting spots, getting good movement on fastballs and throwing lots of off speed is what has to compensate for what he's lost.
