I'll take the one that's extra crispy.

Bought a mix of brown egg layers. Some Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and Silver Laced Wyandottes, just had them mix them up. I'm not sure the grandkids are quite ready for meat birds yet, although all chickens eventually reach that point. The kids are going crazy over them so it's already almost worth the cost.

Hit Popeye's again on Monday (milk pickup). Ordered the chicken this time...mild. Not impressed. KFC original is still better. Anyone claiming otherwise has their head up their ass.I.B. Fine wrote:Mods, please merge with Popeye's threadWatch Out Pylon! wrote:

On a "side" note, ordered the green beans at the drivethru. Ended up sitting at the pickup window 3-4 minutes before someone came to tell me they didn't have any. Love KFC mashed potatoes and gravy so switched to make it a full-on comparison. Have to admit Popeye's MP&G is better. Not sure what's in the gravy. Might be celery seed.
Second side note. Never been a big fan of biscuits...only exception is with sausage gravy. Took a small bite to try. Again, was not impressed. Pitched it.

Seven dollar a dozen eggs I got via the milk connection were a disappointment. Any plans on getting a rooster?LooseGoose wrote:Senior Dickfist wrote:Chicken pot pie?

I might pick a rooster up if things go well. Damned things are noisy and only needed if you want to hatch any eggs. That might be a fun one for the kids to watch next spring.
I ordered 25 chicks so if they all make it to laying my last worry will be more eggs. I should be getting 8-10 dozen a week or so by August/September.

I'm thinking his daughters were doing "mug" shots of their chicks for fun.

...yes. Mugshots in case any decided to fly the coop. Anyway, I thought it was clever and a positive use of their time.

Chickens cost more than they're worth in my opinion. I have two now, but has 5 at one point. RI Reds and Leghorns seem to be the most robust layers I've found and can stand up to the cold winter nights here. After these die, I think I'll lobby for no more.
Chicks are cute as hell though.

Having chickens definitely makes for expensive eggs. I like the whole thing of saving scraps etc and feeding them to be recycled into eggs. At the farm I never bought any feed once they were raised. I may have to keep some on hand here for those days when I don't have a lot of waste to feed.

Nah, too many wild beasts close by. I have feral cats that go through my yard that are scary looking as hell in addition to coyotes, coons and others. Had a black bear on a game cam within a 1/2 mile of here so I'm going to house/pen them. I've got to build that in the next 3-4 weeks while they're growing and am debating between 3 options.
A large tractor to move them around.
A larger stationary chickens only coop and pen.
A larger barn with one end a coop with a pen attached and the other end left available if I want to get the kids a couple other small animals.

Re: The Chicks Thread
I like the concept of buying chickens so you can get a new barn to keep them in. Thinking now that we need some goats.
Goose, we have a coop and chicken yard (used to free range them till they shit on my neighbors driveway). Racoons are our biggest nemesis, never had a problem with coyotes or feral cats. We are just very religious about locking them in at night (as soon as it get dark, they all come in to roost in the coop).

I like this guy's work, I'm thinking of modifying this one:

Although for chickens only this is pretty sweet....
My kids had goats when they were little, they even showed them occasionally. Good times.

Is that tall area in the middle for roosting? Our coop is on the side of another structure with the trusses exposed. The chickens are drawn to it at night. So I think we stumbled on a natural instinct to "get up high" when it's dark (like turkeys). It's very rare that one comes up missing after dark.

I think it's mostly for light/looks/ventilation. He has some inside pics on his ad I linked.

I built my coop out of an old fence that a neighbor was getting rid of. I lined the inside with roll shingling that a friend had. It ain't pretty but it's bomb proof.

And the chickens love it. There are plans online for making coops from pallets. Some of them look pretty decent.

Re: The Chicks Thread
Woke up to disaster this morning.
Went out and all of the chicks were dead. Every. Single. One.
I've bought chicks off and on for 30+ years and never have lost
more than 4 or 5 out of 25.
I'm guessing something happened during shipment or they had
a problem when they left the hatchery.
The grandkids are heartbroken and at 3 and 2 are a little young
for life lessons.
I wrote the hatchery this morning, we'll see what they say.
