Went out and all of the chicks were dead. Every. Single. One.

I've bought chicks off and on for 30+ years and never have lost
more than 4 or 5 out of 25.

I'm guessing something happened during shipment or they had
a problem when they left the hatchery.

The grandkids are heartbroken and at 3 and 2 are a little young
for life lessons.

I wrote the hatchery this morning, we'll see what they say.

That sucks. Especially hard for little kids who probably already had names for them. :(

Look on the bright side, you have more time to build the coop.

Just talked to the hatchery - they're offering to replace or refund. My choice.

So now I need to decide which.

Sorry to hear, Goose. Have you looked into other hatcheries?

Weird. We buy ours from a local farm store. Never had any problems except for one had a malformed toe. That made it easy to tell her from the others. Sorry about your chicks man. Did they say anything about some kind of outbreak? Do you have any local message boards / FB groups you can see if anyone else had similar issues? That's just weird.

Does Family Farm and Home sell their chicks this time of year?

Not yet. I've bought a lot of chicks/ducks/goslings from this place - but mostly back 10-15 years ago.

My daughter thinks I should refund and just get some pullets in a month or two.

Damn Goose. That's terrible and I'm sorry.

It's worse than the "Labrador Massacre of 2000" that I experienced. Soft, fuzzy and sqeaky (just like a chew toy)

Now you can tell us about the Labrador Massacre.

It's not very exciting. I had new chicks in a large plastic storage crate in a room just off a main room. I also had a playful yellow lab named Aja.

As I was walking down a hall, I could see the ass end of the dog (tail wagging excitedly) sticking out into the hall. The head and shoulders were in the room...and I could hear peeps.

I yelled, the dog ran, and I went to find that about 12 out of 15 chicks were dead. No blood and none missing. My best guess is once one stopped peeping, the dog just moved on to the next.

isn't a hatchery sending chicks to a Goose kinda like a fishery sending guppies to a shark?

(kidding - sorry about the chicks. That would not be a fun thing to wake up to).

Something to consider is that if you get pullets the kiddos won't get to watch the chicks grow.
