I did, didn’t like not having to use my brain. It was boring. I got a job where I was allowed to use my brain again. Better. I could see how simple people would like sales tho.

It takes a certain personality type and the right industry to make a match. Good luck to you if you find that match. Your earnings potential will be much higher if you do, but so will your burnout rate. All of the people that I know who are....I guess i will just say 500k+ type of people, are in sales. And pretty much every single one of them have lost their mind. So good luck yo.

Re: Why didn’t you go into sales?
The personality part is important. There is a lot of shitty shitty shit in financial sales. The sales person has to accept “I’m doing this because it pays me more and not because it’s right for the client” and still be able to sleep at night. Do not trust your advisor if you have one people. They don’t care about you. And without politics stuff, for a bit there was a rule about how they actually have to act as your fiduciary but that doesn’t exist now. They were very happy to not have to do that anymore. So super don’t trust them.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:It takes a certain personality type and the right industry to make a match. Good luck to you if you find that match. But also sales is boring as fuck. Same thing day in day out. Make your money, neat. Nothing is challenging. Do the same thing you did yesterday. Yawn.

Yeah, I was hesitant to opine in that regard. In a job in my past where I can most directly relate to the sales folks (even though I deal with them often every day currently but in past I was in a smaller company), I had an honest sales guy and a weasel. They did about the same to be honest. Honest guy kept the Pfizer account. He was awesome. Weasel guy chased up every other account and got on you for doing things to affect his bottom line.
I'm still bitter about that guy and would like to punch him in the throat.

Dude I don’t want to get into too much detail because some of it is political and some personal but for the most part the sales people surrounding finance are shit brained fucktard assholes. They all suck. Good luck finding one that a) knows what they’re doing (most don’t) and b) gives a fuck about what’s in your best interest. You might as well try to find a unicorn or just pay for your own finance classes.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

Re: Why didn’t you go into sales?
Do you need a degree to be in sales? Serious question. And it takes a certain personality to be in sales. Many don’t have it. Tough gig. That’s why the best have a ton of money.

Re: Why didn’t you go into sales?
Last time I bought a car the sales rep broke down in years while we were closing the deal. I guess she was getting fired right after the deal was closed. I thought she did a great job. The finance people were a bunch of lying assholes. They were upset we didn’t use their financing and did a bunch of bs to try to get us to go through them. I wouldn’t even let them pull our credit report. Love the car I got, hated the dealership.

Re: Why didn’t you go into sales?
I did advertising sales (cable) for 2 years right after graduating. Hated it. Going door to door to businesses that mostly don't want to see you was not my thing.
Now I've spent the last more than 20 years on the other side, having sales reps come to me, and it still makes me hate sales. Sure, there are some good reps, but so many sleazeballs, pains in the ass, and flat out dickheads.

So you spent your career in sales, and with everyone bashing it decided to say that everyone is in sales in one way or another?LooseGoose wrote:Everyone that is employed is in sales. Don't kid yourselves.
I mean sure, everyone has to sell themselves to get a job, and keep selling themselves as productive to keep the job (in most cases), but that's like saying "we all pay for sex." True in a sense, but not what someone is talking about when they talk about hookers and blow.

lol, nope. It was just passing on an observation that a wise old man once made to me. Starting out I did a couple years in full time sales but not even close to the majority of my working life.
Then again the majority of my working life was making things and either myself or someone I hired had to sell them so I guess the point is arguable. So I find your analogy incorrect because the simple fact is no sale, no income, no jobs for anyone soon enough, eh? And that applies to nearly every job in America, there are very few things that actually sell themselves.

The concept is that everyone is selling themselves all the time. If you're a garbage man you're selling yourself to the boss that you're the best garbage man and should be a supervisor, etc, etc. So no, you're not selling a widget. You're correct.

Or what about that guy in Japan that was in the news that was willing to go into that nuclear reactor to help shut it down. Doesn’t seem like a sales job and that takes a lot of balls.

Business Development here. Engineering background. You have to understand certain technical aspects when selling to the industry that our team does. Never boring. Best career decision I've made.

Re: Why didn’t you go into sales?
I think their point is that you are selling your service to your company. You have to "sell" yourself to get the job. And you have to "sell" the fact that you continue to be worthy of the job. Even if it's just showing up and doing your job, I guess some could compare that to a salesperson that maintains an existing client.Robert J Sakimano wrote:I don't view such things as a 'service'.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:

Like I said earlier, it's like when someone says "I'd never pay someone to have sex with me" and someone else thinks they're so smart by replying, "You're still paying for it one way or another, if you buy her dinner, or even just listening to her." It's a pretty obtuse way of looking at it, if you ask me, intentionally ignoring what everyone means, by playing semantics. Very Nigel-ish way of arguing.

yes - absolutely, though - the funeral industry is one of the biggest rackets in the country. Taking advantage of folks during what is likely the most vulnerable time in their life. Just torch me and throw me in the woods.
