Urban is about to be put under the microscope for his handling of WR Coach Zach Smith, who (allegedly) beat the shit out his wife multiple times. Urbs fired him before the BIG Media Day and said he said he was aware of an incident in 2009, but did not know of anything in 2015.

Text messages being released by the victim, point to him (or at least his wife) knowing. Based on what we saw happen to Dantonio & Izzo recently (and more certainly to come), I'm not ready to throw him under the bus till all the facts come out. Treading lightly, but this could snow ball on him quickly.

And Zach Smith is a POS (and grandson of Earle Bruce).

Ditto. But the social media response has been pretty predictable and him being fired is not as unthinkable as it once was.

Smith is a scum bag. That much seems clear. What Urban knew and what he did or did not do is pretty murky at this point.

I'm not well read on this so please bs proof my theory that likely has holes in it.

Are we sure Smith was physically abusive? Is there proof beyond her word, her calls to police (no arrests right?), and the picture of her with red marks on her arm?

I've seen his attorneys statement and that got me thinking.

That texted is the worst thing I've seen. I just was able to look at the photos and I don't think they prove anything. Nor does the history that has been recounted... The records of calls, etc.

There was an arrest but no charges filed. I need to look at the circumstances there.

So far I really haven't seen anything that convinces me this is going to be the out.

Ok here's the challenge. Dig into the facts and determine that Zach Smith was definitely physically abusive to Courtney Smith, and that Urban Meyer knew that Zach Smith was physically abusive to Courtney Smith and ignored it.

I'm sorry, but after this past year I'm not willing to just accept the accusations and either end of the 'he said/she said' as facts.

The 2009 arrest report was enough to result in an arrest. Ok. Reading on the incident, and putting that into context with more recent incidents, it would not be a stretch to claim that this was a couple that got physical with each other. Zach Smith had more apparent physical injuries than Courtney did in the 2009 arrest incident.

The photos that McMurphy shared today were less than convincing to me that there was serious physical abuse. The reports of him "looking into her windows", the incident where he got the criminal trespass, etc....they don't convince me definitively of anything.

Now, one can conclude that there's a lot of smoke here, and it's easy to see that this was a toxic relationship. And I am on the female's side in these things, don't get me wrong. I'm just trying to look at it as a skeptic that knows that OSU Football $$ is going to be a very important factor.

I don't see a whole lot of concrete evidence here that Zach Smith is a proven physical abuser of his wife, and therefore.....I don't see a whole lot of evidence that Urban should have known he was definitely a physical abuser and canned his ass.

Please tell me where I'm wrong. Again I'm just positing a theory here.

Yep. Nordic posted that a few posts up. Frankly if I'm trying to be neutral here, which I am, that is by far the most damning thing I've read. Is that enough? Does it prove he was physically abusive? Does it prove that Urban knew he was physically abusive?

Hatch, IMO you are 100% wrong on Smith. Again my opinion based on the info and there isn't even a doubt (especially after reading those two txts).

Regarding Urban's knowledge, legal or moral cupability, that's where I believe it gets fuzzy.

Ok. I don't want to be misconstrued here. Please understand. I am not in any way defending Smith. I am saying that if I am an extreme skeptic (which I'm not really but I'm trying to pretend I am one), I can connect all of these dots and say there is nothing that 100% convinces me that Zach Smith has physically abused his wife.

Personally? I'd say yeah, probably 80% chance he did. Probably she hit him a lot and he was physical with her back which is 400% wrong.

But I'm trying to be realistic. OSU Football is beyond the scope of any kind of giant we can imagine. If there's any doubt there at all (which there is), they're not going to let Urban go down for it.

Unless they have Bob Stoops waiting in the wings.

I think it is a possibility. They are one of the Top 3 CF programs right now. I'm sure they think they can get anyone they want (next year). Their brand is bigger than Urban. This is a hot button topic. They fired Tressel and Woody.

Putting him on leave was smart. Puts out the immediate media fire. Let it simmer down and figure it out.

Could their shit hit the fan MSU 2016 style?** Probably not, but theres a chance:

-Talented roster with a new starting QB who has a marquee road win under his belt --> high expectations
-Off the field drama
-Early loss (ours was Wisconsin where the wheels fell off .. TCU could hand them a similar walloping)
-Wishful/possibly insensitive thinking by me to even be talking about football when we're dealing with such scum bags?

O.K., here's some worthless trivia for you. Don Berner was a Manistee High School kid in the late 70's. He moved to Oklahoma and went to Yukon HS. I believe. Anyway, he texts me once in a while. Well, Brett McMurphy was a friend of his at Yukon. He's the guy who broke this story. Brett is not the most famous guy there, cause a third guy they used to hang with at the school, (they're all about 56) is Garth Brooks.
