Jesus. All the quotes I've read seem really nonchalant about this. Like "oh well. these things happen." Is it really that common for horses to die on the track?

We really need to move away from racing horses and toward what the good lord intended them for: Served as a mighty fine meal.

Do they eat the horses that die on the track? If so somebody’s eating well lately.

Hard to tell. Busted both legs, so it could’ve been a mob hit.

I checked the inter webs and horse meat cannot be sold, due a lack of inspection process. I guess if you were a cowboy and your horse croaked, you could eat the meat before you sell the carcass to a glue factory.

Maybe not for all 22 but it wouldn't surprise if some were.
Buddy owned racing quarter horses. Basically drag racing for horses. He said he never went through so much cash before you could even see if they could race. Buy the horse at auction, transportation, boarding, food, trainer, somebody to ride the horse while training, vet visits, rent for the stall at the track and hiring a jockey. In his words, All that damned money before you find out if the goddamned beast can run"
Thoroughbreds are even pricier. You find out you bought a bust, the horse has injurty issues or the horse looked good but won't run a lick, the horse breaks a leg at a track with a shitload of broken legs and get a check.

My dad owned thoroughbreds for most of my life, especially before the DRC went defunct. I was at the track a lot as a kid. Never saw a horse have to be euthanized during training or a race. That's purely anecdotal obviously.

I was at the finish line when big brown won the derby and eight bells had to be put down. We had gone to a dozen derby’s. Best seats we ever bought. My wife won 700 bucks on eight bells. She wanted to give her winnings to peta. We all talked her out of it. 140,000 people just quiet. Was a bummer.

Never been to a horse track. My FIL was really into it...was at DRC when my ex was born. Spent a lot of time at Del Mar after getting a place in Carlsbad. He got to know Jack Van Berg pretty well over the years. Made decent cash when Alysheba won the '87 Derby and Preakness.

I saw where they think the rain may gave compromised the track at SA. It's a synthetic track and not used to the unprecedented amounts of rain. Who knows.

Can’t believe you were that close to that. I have had a similar experience. Went to a derby party and the good times came to a screeching halt when that happened every one was bummed out. We had to turn the tv off and put some music on but it was still heavy on everyone’s mind. Our friend had placed a bet on 8 Bells at the OTB in Greenpoint. We went with her to get her winnings and she immediately gave it to a homeless guy. I haven’t watched a horse race since. Lost complete interest in it.

You know, I never knew this until a few years ago, but horses like this one don’t actually need to die. They can absolutely be fixed. The problem is that a) they are insured for lots of money b) they won’t race again after the injury, just be alive and not dead. The horse racing industry is really fucking gross. They’d prefer to get the cash than keep the horse alive.
Enjoy the derby if you choose to watch it next week, but just know that it’s the result of probably thousands of dead animals that didn’t make the cut but could have been used elsewhere or more humanely. It’s a really gross sport that shouldn’t exist.

Really fucking gross for sure. And it adds to a bigger problem across horse culture and enthusiasts. They think they have to kill their own horses when it has a similar injury.

I look down on Spain for the bullfighting, as that is pure, unadulterated barbarism. Seems like horseracing is only slightly less objectionable, insofar as the explicit stated goal is not the death of animals. But it is pretty clear that neither has a place in any civilized society.

Not trying to dimmish the point, but is it a bit ironic that we have a 170 reply thread on the NFL draft (CTE)?

Yeah I mean motown said it and while it might be a bit hypocritical I think the difference is that no one is forcing them to do it. And we don’t kill a running back who gets hurt but could otherwise be fine.

Interesting points. I kind of view the NFL like predatory loans. Sure no one’s forcing you to take the loan, but you’re certainly qualified to get it and not it looks really nice.

In a previous life, I worked for the agency that regulated the Horsies in Michigan. There are onsite vet(s) at every race randomly drug testing, and they ALWAYS find cheats.
Just think if the NFL got to the point where they HAD to test half the guys coming off the field EVERY Sunday... that's horse racing. (or at least it was)

I think you are over simplifying things, but I really don't GAF enough to get into a 10-page debate on it. And I'm certainly not going to defend the horse racing industry. It's shady as hell, always has been. I'm still going to watch the Derby.

Hope they never ban the running of the bulls. Find it hysterical seeing people running for their lives and sometimes getting gored for their stupidity.

What was that HBO show about a horse track with Dustin Hoffman, I think? It was really good, but IIRC it never came back for season 2 because of some horse injuries/deaths. I think that was filmed at Santa Anita, which is why this thread made me think of it.

I’ve always compartmentalized parts of football in order to continue to justifying watching it because I like it and grew up with it. Truth be told I probably shouldn’t. But I do and I’ll probably continue to lie to myself to justify that for awhile.
I give no such quarter to horse racing. It’s much worse than just the horses that die on the track. It’s very very gross and it doesn’t need to exist, most people only care about it for a minute and a half a year.
Thanks for ruining the nfl draft though :(

The running of the bulls is fine with me, based on what I know about it. I love videos of matadors getting gored, bulls messing up humans stupid enough to fuck with them tickles me.

Re: Santa Anita horse deaths
Thoroughbred horse racing is on the decline. There have been over 40 tracks close since 2000 including Arlington Park (that may be the new home of he NFL Bear’s stadium and complex)
The Economist just had an article that mentioned attendance at Belmont Park is down almost 90% since 1980. That’s not stopping NY pols from pushing a $455M state funded rebuild.
There are people (I’ve been one of them who liked going to the track) however even 10-15 years ago horse racing deaths weren’t even mentioned in media. Now they are reported and the reports name names of owners and trainers. Not good PR.
Won’t be surprised if the racing thoroughbred business will shrink. Fewer tracks, fewer racing dates. There’s money in the Triple Crown tracks, Haleah,Saratoga and Santa Anita to keep racing but lesser tracks real estate is worth more than keeping them operating.
