MSU Hockey 2019-20 season thread

Been waiting for kingstonlake to start the thread like he did last year...

Wisconsin appears to be bad (2-5-1 headed into the weekend), but MSU swept them this weekend, so maybe the sweep isn't very impressive. It's the way they came back from being down 3-1 to start the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead. Wiscy scored before the regulation buzzer and Khodorenko won it in OT.

6-3-1 and tied with OSU for 2nd place with 16 points, trailing PSU by a point.

Playing Michigan Tech in the early GLI game right now. As far as I can tell, you won't find it anywhere on TV.

Fair assessment as the GLI gets going. The reality is the program was a complete re-build. The model for that in modern college hockey is Providence under Nate Leaman. I tend to think he started one year ahead in the process compared to Cole given how far MSU hockey had sunk with Anastos but Providence made the NCAA in year three of that rebuild. Put up a title in year four, NCAA every year since, Frozen Four last season.

MSU is in every game now with a chance to win. We're floating around 500, talk of an NCAA bid is not unreasonable and anyone can obviously see the team is ready to compete against peer programs again. A loss in the opener of the GLI against Tech in a big NHL arena is disappointing but Michigan State hockey is relevant again. As always, go State!

Reminds me of the movie Pleasantville. Under Mason there was just an expectation that we were one of the top teams every year. Heck, it's odd that we didn't win more than one title with him as coach. And then we thought Comley was a bit too much of a roller-coaster. We did win a title in '07 and then, to be fair, Rick checked out a bit. That happens with older coaches and you can draw whatever parallels with the football program that you'd like.

Anastos was a disaster. Loyal Spartan, good guy, good administrator but no experience at this level of coaching, no experience in recruiting and no understanding of player development. MSU hockey went into the abyss. None of that, none, is on Anastos. It's 100% on Mark Hollis. Heck Mark didn't even conduct a proper search with Cole but he's at least reasonably qualified and combines that with pride in what Spartan hockey should be. If you're a Spartan hockey fan, there is not a single reason to think kindly about Hollis.

Hopefully Cole can continue this path, get MSU back to consistent NCAA tournament level hockey and back in the mix for winning a conference and competing for a title. We're #19 in the RPI right now, .500 hockey, and we're capable of beating anyone. We're just not consistent. It's not back to where we once were but it feels good to be relevant again. Had Hirose come back (a right choice for him to go) we could be something special. That's how close we are to being truly back.....

Spartans enter final stretch eyeing tournament bid

Danton Cole and his Spartan hockey team find themselves in a position not many people thought they would be in as the second semester gets underway. The No. 20 Spartans are in a position where if they finish the season strong, they could find themselves in the 16-team NCAA tournament with a shot to play in the Frozen Four in Detroit. This is shocking after losing Taro Hirose and Zach Osburn last year and playing one of the hardest schedules in Division I hockey.
