I still don't understand all the hate on the Tucker hire. Dantonio retired at a pretty shitty time. We needed a head coach. What exactly were we supposed to do? Promote one of our unqualified assistant coaches? Fuck off outrage brigade.

That is exactly what they wanted us to do. MSU showing they are willing to go out and spend $$ is something a football royalty school does, not MSU. MSU is supposed to hire from within and go wandering for another 40 years in the wilderness. We aren't supposed to try and compete, that doesn't work in college football world.

I like the staff a lot. I thought they brought back the right guys. Based on what I've read, I would say here are my grades simply on the quality of hires:

Jay Johnson - B
OL Coach Kap - A- (CU improved tremendously running the ball under him and he's supposed to be a great recruiter)
TE Gilmore - A-
WR Courtney Hawkins - A. I love this hire based on everything I've ready about the guy.

DC - B+ Sounds like he's got his shit together
LB Tressel - A- Great guy to retain
DL Burton - A- Great guy to retain
DB HB - A++

ST guy - Don't know. Sounds like they improved under him. B.

Per Comp, he took Colorado from 116th to 25th in "OL yards" (an advanced metric, based on weighting the rush yards to things like for the first 2-3 yards of a run crediting 100% to the OL, and 50% of 3-10 yards, or something like that). He also had Colorado as 10th in the nation in "power yards" (or something like that), which is based on run plays with less than 2 yards to go that resulted in a first down/touchdown (something we could really stand to improve in). One non-MSU coach that Comp talked to said that Kap is better than any OL coach that MSU has had since Pat Ruel.

Of course, we'll see how it all plays out, but he seems to be pretty well thought of in coaching circles.

$700k well thought of? His resume goes Southern Miss --> North Carolina --> Colorado. If he's so awesome, why no "1st tier" (or even "2nd tier") programs?
