So I wasn’t around for the 1976 Swine Flu Vaccine debacle. Can some of you posters that remember it describe it? How damaging was it to Ford’s presidential campaign? He was trying to push it out in October, right? Are there any parallels to what is happening this year? Of course the swine flu that year did not turn out to be a pandemic.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Ford pardoning Nixon was infinitely more damaging to his campaign.

I don't know much about what happened in 1976, but I can imagine a certain amount of hysteria if a disease that killed tens of millions of people worldwide suddenly popped back up again after 50+ years. And that could have led to a rushed vaccine (though as mentioned, Ford had a lot of other things hindering him, not the least of which was his association with pure evil....not Nixon, I'm referring to Ford's alma mater of course).

For those that were teens and dont remember it, that's understandable. Do people that were teenagers during the Swine flu outbreak in the 2000s remember it much now? I was in my 30s and that was only what 11-12 years ago, and I don't remember it all that well, or at least that it kind of runs together with SARS and MERS in my memory.
