I'd be your groupie, Gus.
Actually there was a really awesome and very cute flag girl that I knew pretty well at the time (early-mid 90s).

Well there was the problem.
in 72 there was only 1 female band member, the first female in the band, an alto saxophonist.
Other than the Big Ten Flags, carried by males, and the Drum Major, there were no band members who didn't play an instrument.
By 74/75 in the Spartan Brass there were dozens of female band members, however.

There was that one time I farted on a hard chair and it sounded like a tuba blat. That oughta get me an honorary position in the SMB.

Love music but was never instrumentally talented. Met a few MSB members freshmen year ('77) and gained huge respect for what they do.TrapperGus wrote:Well there was the problem.

Trumpet player across the hallway was up and out by 7am every home game day. One played flute in HS. No flutes in the MSB so she switched to flag core to be in the band. She carried the Purdue flag junior & senior years.
The MSB put on great home shows while I was there. The road shows had to be a PITA.

Women who complain about a lack of opportunity for women are still correct, we are a very gender driven country. Most people just don't realize what short time ago, such as 1971 for the SMB, it was when women were not allowed to join groups.

I got to MSU in 80. I had no idea jus 8 years earlier that was going on at what I thought was a progressive college. The school I was an administrator at sent four kids to msu in SMB, one became the band major. All were talented three women. One young lady just passed from cancer a couple years ago.
Fuck cancer.

I loved how the SMB used to enter the stadium. I think Madden put that to bed years ago.
Let’s see if I can do this phonetically:
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Duh dahduh dahduh
Dahduh dahduh duht duht duht.
I might be missing a Duh dahduh dahduh.
Then the band brass points toward the west side seats, while Tim Skubick introduces the SMB. Gave me chills every time I heard it when I was a wee lad, even into HS and undergrad. Too bad it’s not done anymore, or maybe they restarted it. Screw you, Madden.
