Proponents of term limits thought they would lessen the influence of career politicians, reduce the power of lobbyists and open the door for diverse candidates from various backgrounds. Comprehensive research on the effects of term limits from Wayne State University research suggests that term limits have had the opposite effect.

Sarbaugh-Thompson spent 13 years in her role as a political science professor at Wayne State researching how term limits have changed the effectiveness of the state’s Legislature. She argues that term limits in Michigan have failed, largely due to newcomers’ lack of knowledge and ability to spend time policymaking.

Term limits have also failed to strengthen ties between legislators and their districts, or sever cozy relationships with lobbyists and have weakened the legislature in its relationship with the executive branch, Sarbaugh-Thompson said.

The approved legislative resolution would allow lawmakers to serve up to a total 12 years, regardless of which chamber they are in.

Still hate it.

Get rid of term limits totally, the State Government was much better before they existed.

edit - Also, this law is going the wrong way - fewer overall years allowed.

Agree with the critics that the Financial Disclosure section is too weak.

edit - Vote against is my feeling right now.
