My drive home can be up to 10 minutes depending on lights. My trek is east-west. Mound light is brutally long. Both Ryan & Dequindre lights also favor north-south traffic. If not for the lights, my work travel time would be 6-8 minutes.Floyd Robertson wrote:My drive home is 4 minutes, 7 if I get caught at the stoplight. I don't even remember the song today.

Nice list, but I’m sorry, the OP changed the requirements to a listening window of 4pm-6pm. Your entry does not qualify, but we do have some nice parting gifts.

There are a couple of cool Lynyrd Skynyrd documentaries out there.
The Netflix one details how they formed, the 'Hell House" cabin they wrote a bunch of their music, etc.
There is another (don't remember what it is on) that goes through all the band members through time. It is crazy.

Whenever I hear Sweet Home Alabama, I think of the Cap One Bowl tailgate before we played Alabama, and these trashy Bama fans playing that over and over again. I dont think they ever played their fight song.

Love me some Lucinda. I've seen her a handful of times, including her opening for Tom Petty in '99. That's quite a bill.Rick Saunders wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:Off the top of my head, this evening I have listened to:

and if anyone is interested in some good 'ol swampy geetar shreddin', check this tune. John and Kenny throwin' licks back and forth is epic.
if you're in a pinch for time, just check from about 5:00 - 7:00 or so. Thank me later.

Unsolicited advice: once she absorbs the whole Skynyrd thing, introduce her to Southern Rock Opera by Drive By Truckers. It's loosely a concept album about the 'duality of the Southern thing' - lots of Skynyrd references, storylines, narratives. Allow me...
"Ronnie and Neil": works to dispell the myopic view that all Southerners are racist bigots. How some of the biggest artists in music in the 60's and 70's traveled to the town of Muscle Shoals, AL to record.
Church blew up in Birmingham
Four little black girls killed for no goddamn good reason
All this hate and violence can't come to no good end
A stain on the good name.
A whole lot of good people dragged threw the blood and glass
Blood stains on their good names and all of us take the blame
Meanwhile in North Alabama, Wilson Pickett comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound
Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound
then it goes into the rumored feud between Ronnie Van Zandt and Neil Young.
there's a ton of great songs in between (I'd never steer you wrong), but for the sake of time, skip to the last two songs. A raucous, guitar-driven "Shut Up and Get on the Plane", written in the spirit of the plane that Skynyrd was on having mechanical issues.. some of the band and crew didn't want to take the trip from Greenville, SC to Baton Rouge:
Well your wishes and your feelings
Your bad dreams and intuitions
Are about as much good to me right now as a brand new set of golf clubs
We've been this close to death before, we were just too drunk to know it
Guess the price of being sobers being scared out of your mind
When it comes your time to go, ain't no good way to go about it
Ain't no use in thinking bout it
You'll just drive yourself insane
There comes a time for everything
And the time has come for you to shut your mouth and get your ass on the plane
the last song on the record, this austere dirge with some stereophonic fuzz in direct opposition to the previous declaration of whiskey, loud guitars and not being afraid of mechanical issues:
"Angels and Fuselage":
Looking out the window, the trees are getting closer it seems.
Thinking bout you Darling.
Adding up the cost of these dreams.
Strapped to this projectile, just a blink ago I was back in school.
Smoking by the gym door, practicing my rock-star attitude
And I'm scared shitless of what's coming next.
I'm scared shitless, these angels I see in the trees are waiting for me.
The engines have stopped now. We all know we are going down. Last call for alcohol.
Sure wish I could have another round.
And I'm scared shitless of what's coming next.
Scared shitless, these angels I see in the trees are waiting for me.
Waiting for me.
Friends in the swamp.
Friends on the ground, in the trees.
Angels and fuselage.
so fucking good.
