I’ll take the job. My platform is kicking Michigan out of the conference. And if we can’t do that we’ll make life so miserable for them that they leave.

No need for jokes, I’m sure there are some legit conspiracy takes coming.

His son plays at MSU. It was (should be) the most pro-MSU the B10 has ever been.
100 bucks says the next Commish is a UM alum or has other ties to UM.
I'm not saying that in a conspiracy way, I'm saying that in a UM insecure reactionary way. I think having the Commissioner's son play at MSU ruffled some feathers over there just for the way it puts MSU in a good light. They want some of that PR for themselves.

No one will leave the Big Ten because of the TV revenue. That's it. Has nothing to do with research, tradition or anything else. Staying with the Big Ten is good for the bottom line.

He cannot be dumb enough to take this offer can he? Big Ten Commissioner is a cushy job in comparison. Plus the pay is probably half or maybe even a quarter of what he is getting now.

No chance of that for a long time. The SEC just signed a new 10 year deal in 2020 that doesnt even start until 2024.

Re: Big Ten Commish on the move?
That is the very odd part. As B1G commissioner he makes 4.1 million (plus bonuses). The current Bears president makes 400K and the highest paid president of an NFL team reportedly makes 700K. NFL GM's make much more (between 1 and 3 million) but not NFL presidents/CEO's.gomersbro wrote:He cannot be dumb enough to take this offer can he? Big Ten Commissioner is a cushy job in comparison. Maybe the job sucks? You see him the stands having to watch Big Ten football and last season featured one game that really mattered. Maybe he did it to improve quality of life.

Maybe through sports book deals they could start luring schools away? Doubtful but that’s the next big cash haul.

It's an arms race between the SEC & the B1G. MSU could get a good deal if the SEC wants them.
Re: Big Ten Commish on the move?
Fucking steve... yeah, dude is going to give up 3.5 million a year because espn talking heads convinced you quality of football isn't up to some "standard" (which is subjective at MOST)....steveschneider wrote:MSU addict wrote:That is the very odd part. BIg Ten Network draws revenue from the New York, New Jersey, DC and soon the LA market. Also, UofM and Penn State are ratings power houses. When it comes to ratings and cable revenue the SEC network doesn’t have a chance.

I'd bet dealing with (at least) 14 different bosses is a pain in the ass.
Bears job might be more rewarding, especially with construction of a new stadium and entertainment district in Arlington Park.

Florida & Texas are two of the fastest growing states.
The SEC needs to expand its geography, which is why MSU to the SEC has some appeal.

2) sec/espn's talking heads/twitter troll's perception of "quality of football" would be the dumbest of reasons.

Who's talking about ESPN talking heads? You don't need them to see how bad it is. The games are commercial fests with Iowa going three and out and punting in between them. Even the MSU beat writers were on twitter all season complaining about what a terrible product it is. Get with it man.

Wow that is bigger drop than I expected. As for the 14 bosses, I really don't think that has much effect. The Presidents of the Universities are more concerned with running a University and not so much in conference politics. I don't think Presidents like Stanley are interested in such things and would let the Big Ten Commissioner do his job.

Stanley is not MSU's President.
The B1G Commis has two bosses, one in A2 and one in Columbus.
Maybe he just can't stand the crazy level of hypocrisy the B1G apples to those two schools.

If it is such a terrible product stop watching it. In reality, i.e. non-steve world, all conferences have shitty games not just the big ten. For every Alabama - Georgia there is a Vandy - Arkansas game.
To your other point commercials are not just a big ten issue. I spent some time this week watching my first NFL games in 5+ years. My god it is much worse than I remember and certainly worse than Big Ten games. But I don't think it is hurt the NFL much.

As Big Ten Commissioner, I would think you're dealing with Presidents, ADs, Football Coaches, Basketball Coaches, etc.
I can see how that might be a pain in the ass.
He got the Big Ten a new TV deal. Good time to get out and move on to a new challenge, and taking over the Bears would seem to be it.

Football is a brutal game and in any civilized society it would be outlawed.
I watch MSU, once or twice a year, and that is it.
The one thing the NFL has going for it is the skill level involved. Agree that unless you are really into cheering the skill of the players instead of which team is winning it is no better than any other level of football.

Yes I know Stanley isn't around anymore. An interim president would even have less influence in the big ten office. And saying only Michigan and Ohio State's (and soon the be USC's) presidents matter, that actually goes to my point. Most university presidents will not have time to interfere.
Or maybe he sees the model is unsustainable and doesn't want to be around for the fallout in the coming years.

14 athletic directors plus Harbaugh's daily phone calls telling him how to do his job...I would want to leave, too.

If having MSU fined for $100k because UofM had lack of control in the UofM stadium doesn't show that it doesn't matter who is running MSU as far as the B1G is concerned nothing will.

Re: Big Ten Commish on the move?
The McCaskey Family is going to open the wallet to get Warren who was reportedly making $4M per season with the Big Ten.
I’m guessing Warren liked the negotiations part of the job like TV contracts and adding UCLA and USC but he didn’t like the crap of having to deal with crap like the tunnel incidents in aa this year.
As much as many of us disliked Delaney he changed the conference funding formula with the BTN along with the additions of PSU, Maryland, Rutgers and Nebraska for a TV footprint / revenue that’s been the envy of other conferences. He did that over 30 years.
