Where should I move to?
22. Single. No obligations or high school sweet hearts to stay back for.
Whereever I go, I'll be there for at least a few years to get my masters. Going to have to get in-state tuition so I'll become a resident - working for 6 months to a year to do that.
I'm honestly open for anywhere, I've been looking at Colorado, Texas (Austin), and thinking about the Carolinas?
You guys probably going to give me shit for not sounding very prepared for after-college but I still have classes until the 20th and I'm in no rush to jump into something I don't enjoy when I'll be working the rest of my life anyway.
what ya got?

Re: Where should I move to?
How the hell do you afford to live without a job? That's what I don't understand. I worked throughout college and I wasn't able to do even 10% of the things you talked about doing. Student loans, or your parents are just loaded and you get to live off that for eternity? All the more power to you for however you do it.
That being said, if you want 4 seasons, but milder winter, NC, MD, VA. CO to smoke weed. I always wanted to at least visit Oregon and Washington, but I still haven't. Look at cost of living. If you like desert, warm area's, NM in Albuquerque or Sante Fe.

Re: Where should I move to?
On your list I'd probably pick CO just because of the nature and outdoor activities there.
You should visit Austin, it's a nice town but I couldn't ever picture myself settling there. It does seem like a great place to settle for creative people.

I've had a job since sophomore year, bruh. I'm done with that since moving out of EL. That's my spending money. My school is mostly loans but I got some plans for that. My parents aren't loaded at all, I'm the fourth kid to go through MSU and they don't make shit.

I've visited Austin twice as my brother lives there. He enjoys it, and we get along great. Could work.

Re: Where should I move to?
don't go any farther south than North Carolina - and even it's becoming more and more backwards by the day. Asheville is lovely (and the hometown of one Mr Robert J Sakimano) but higher ed opportunities there - especially for graduate level work - is minimal. Chapel Hill is nice if you can put up with all of the khaki pants.
east Tennessee isn't bad, in terms of a good place to live. UT - Knoxville might be worth checking into. Yeah, you're still in the south but it's a direct shot up I-75 and you're back in Michigan in about 8 hours. Also, half an hour to the east and you're in the Smoky Mountains and closer to North Carolina. I-40 west and you're in Nashville in a few hours - a really cool town.
I enjoy cold weather - so I've always thought Minneapolis would be a good place to live. Seems like a fairly progressive place, not too big of a city, solid educational facilities, some natural beauty with the lakes, etc.
out west, from my estimation, can be a bit overrated. I'm sure there are nicer places in Oregon, Colorado, etc to live but Boulder and Eugene seem kind of cliche of late. Too hot in Arizona, though Flagstaff is nice and at a nice elevation.
bottom line - you're only young and not weighted down by job/family once (unless your wife leaves you and you decide to start dressing like a professional wrestler in your spare time) - enjoy it, explore the world, be safe, be nice to people, etc.

Re: Where should I move to?
Do what my cousin did. He racked up about $75k in student loans and he's been living in S. Korea teaching English for the last 5-7 years, making good money. He just got a raise, but has to move to Dubai. I think he finished his masters while living and partying all over SE Asia.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:InTenSity wrote:How the hell do you afford to live without a job? Seems like you'd probably want to base this decision off of which school you might go to given a certain location. Crazy talk, I know.

Re: Where should I move to?
North Carolina is nice with UNC and other good state universities but get there at least 18 months early. They are very tough on residency.
Gainesville is a nice place to live while in grad school. Same for Arizona and ASU.
Austin is the only place in Texas I might live but costs have skyrocketed in the last two years.

Don't go anywhere that's hot and humid in the Summer. Especially if you have fieldwork you'd need to do as part of your master's.
I made that mistake. Almost got heat stroke a few times. Probably why I'm dain bramaged.

I suggest moving in with Blanch. Top 3 reasons
1. Free tickets to Blanchfest
2. The experience. The stories.....
3. Research. Blanch represents a research subject for every discipline.

Re: Where should I move to?
I'm trying my hardest to get to Chicago. That's where my girl friend is and the most opportunities for me are there.
If I could live anywhere in the us, I'd go to San Diego. Just crazy about the weather there. I know California has a drought that seems endless and it's expensive and far away but that sunshine and the California lifestyle appeal to me so much. Would love to be in southern California.

Less directions, moreso a job. Unlike the OP, i don't get to travel using unlimited funds.
I have a phone interview with a company in Chicago at lunch tomorrow, really hoping that pans out.

Jesus. Well since you're paying for that degree with student loans, go to a big city and have fun.
Then after you graduate, change your name, your email, and move out of the country because you are never paying off that debt.
