This guy was an Americian Hero. If you read about him, he didn't "talk the talk" he "walked the walk" with a tour as a private in combat in Nam and then as a combat observer. What he did to expose what was going on and how the administrations were covering what was going on was extraordinary brave.

It’s really sad—all of them. The idea of swimming across the current makes sense, but panic has to set in quickly and it’s too scary to correct human nature when the brain says it doesn’t make sense. Knowing what to do seems almost like self-defense. It would be good if the proper maneuver was taught in swim classes so it almost becomes second nature. IDK, maybe it already is in some places.

without knowing the facts surrounding this, I once (maybe 2012-2013) got taken out to sea by a current that I did not know existed. I was in the Pacific and one second my feet were in some sand and the next minute, sand was nowhere to be found.
My first instinct was to panic a bit but I knew that get me nowhere, so, I put my head down into the water and told myself "do 20 freestyle strokes toward the shore" - that's what I did. I came up, no ocean floor.
big deep breath, did 20 more freestyle strokes toward the shore, came up and felt sand and I was about chest deep in the water. The sigh of relief I felt was as real as any feeling I have ever felt in my life.
even as I was typing this story, I felt my chest tighten. I was scared.
whew.. anyway.

Let the current take you for a while load on your back once the strong current stops pushing you swim sideways away from it, then do your strokes in. Do not take the same straight line in that is taking you out.
I know that’s easy to say, but when you are panicking, you don’t think to let the current take you further out. Eventually, it does stop then you just swim sideways then, turn towards sure, and swim casually in
I went through two weeks of hell the summer of my senior year of high school training to be a lifeguard on Lake Michigan. I can tell you that I’m pretty sure some of the drills they had us do in 1979 would be illegal today. Because they were probably dangerous. Anyway, I learned one thing, when you start to drowned if someone comes to save you, your first instinct is to crawl as high as you can on their body. That’s why they say never go get a drowning victim most likely if that happens, there won’t be one victim there will be two.
Reach. Throw. Row. Tow and finally go. Five steps from safest to most dangerous in saving a drowning victim.

I guess I never thought of rip currents in Lake Michigan, but this woman lost two loved ones last year and has been on mission to improve warnings.

We were at a sandbar around Munising Bay a few years ago and a couple started swimming toward the channel marker. It took about 20 of us screaming and a nearby pontoon boat to get them to stop. You ain’t swimming back from a 5-10 knot current, let alone anything faster.
