Michigan Republican Party Chair Kristina Karamo and other officials could face removal as the party enters into a critical presidential election year.

Karamo, who was elected as chair of the party following a failed bid as the Republican nominee for Michigan secretary of state in 2022, has faced calls for resignation from within the party, with eight of the party’s 13 district chairs issuing a statement voicing concerns about the party’s financial state.

Party Co-Chair Malinda Pego also signed on to a petition supporting a meeting to discuss the potential removal of Karamo as chair.

“As representatives entrusted with the responsibility of guiding our party’s trajectory into the critical year of 2024, it is incumbent upon us, the State Committee members, to ensure the values enshrined in our Republican Party platform are upheld. The upcoming election demands a united front and strategic planning to secure victory. This necessitates a cohesive and effective leadership structure within our party,” Pego said in a Dec. 22 statement to party members.

The first article is about a procedure that the Michigan Republicans were forced to adopt because the national party said they couldn't have the primary as early as the Democratic legislature scheduled it, which although it was because the national Democratic Party wants to shake up the primary schedules, it is also payback for the Republicans scheduling the 2016 primary earlier than the national Democratic Party allowed at that time.

Karamo’s administration on Saturday announced state committee members voted to keep her on the job by a vote of 59-1. Her administration said members also voted to oust some of her strongest critics from the party’s state committee and ban her former co-chair, Malinda Pego, for five years.

“This is a happy day of remembrance because it represents a renewed unification of spirit and purpose within the Michigan Republican Party,” Karamo said in a statement following her leadership vote during a meeting in Houghton Lake.

The letters, shared widely with GOP precinct delegates across Michigan in a Thursday email, allege trademark infringement, copyright infringement and defamation of character by various critics of Karamo, who contends she remains the state party's "undisputed" leader.

The cease and desist demands come as state committee members who voted to remove Karamo earlier this month plan to meet again on Saturday to try and elect a permanent replacement.

GRAND RAPIDS — A lawsuit seeking to strip Kristina Karamo of her remaining power in the Michigan Republican Party can proceed after a judge on Tuesday rejected her motion to dismiss the case on technical grounds.

At issue is whether Karamo was properly removed as state party chair on Jan. 6. She has called that vote by one faction of the state committee an "illegal" move by critics who later chose to replace her with former Ambassador Pete Hoekstra.

In a ruling from the bench, Kent County Judge J. Joseph Rossi rejected Karamo's argument that the Michigan GOP leadership dispute amounts to a "political question" that courts cannot decide. He also rejected claims that Karamo deserved special protections as a state officer — which she is not.
